Title: how easy to fix jumping 2 gear?

hi,

i am about to put a 2.5N/A into my series 3 and at the mo have a jumping second gear when slowing down with no engine revs on.

As i have the engine out and the gearbox is easy to get to is this job easy to fix or is it just worth fitting a reconditioned gearbox?

any help much appreciated.

I would say a reconditioned gearbox mate. If you never done any work on gearboxes then its a big ish task. Your best bet is when you have fitted the new recon box then take time and catalog it whilst you re build it...Then tell me how ya did it because I still have mine in bits....he he

No its not a weak spring . Once its in gear it will stay in gear  unless something is worn . the detent spring only works on the selector fork , and the syncro springs only work on the syncro hub . I have had this problem before . You could try tightening the nut on the back of the main shaft ( I think its 200 ft.lbs but check first ) but you need the tool ( or make one ) . There is a bronze bush inside the box on the main shaft which breakes if the main shaft has any end float . If the bush is broken you need to fix it or put up with the problem . If you have end float you need to eliminate it and maybe the bush is OK . .......Al
