Title: yet more problems help
Post by: landroverkeith on April 20, 2006, 19:24:42
Now i know this is a silly question but how can i test to see if my diff lock is actually engaging??

I know it used to lock fine as i have used it on various trips.
But been out in car today trying to move it i noticed the lever doesnt seem to sit how i remember..... it engages low range very easly but i dont seem to be able to push it over to the left to lock the diff ive tried driving up and down the road in low and what i considered to be diff lock engaged but the dash light doesnt come on as normal and im certain the lever used to move further over..    :(

all in all am very seriously considering selling the money pit    :(

To test if it is engaging just jack up one wheel, hand brake off, out of gear, with dif lock open it should turn, dif lock engaged and it should not. Its not uncommon for engaging dif lock to become difficult due to crap around, and corrosion on the linkage.

Easiest way I can think off is to engage it, jack up One wheel and leave gearbox in netural. Try and turn wheel :?

edit

beaten by two minutes lol

What I did was lifted the centre consol out, cut a small slice in the foam stuff that is held on with rivits just above the linkages and got loose with wd40, 3 in1 oil etc and gently persuaded it to work again. Dont think mine had been used in years

I have heard of people freeing it off by getting a mate to wiggle to stick while they crawl underneath with wd40.  Gotta be worth a go!

mines wouldnt select diff lock at all i stripped out the centre consol drilled out the rivets on the cover ,then you can see the diff lock lever selector you can take it out and free it off its just time consumin but it didnt cost anything (not many of them on a landrover). When putting the cover back on i tapped 6mm bolts in didnt use poprivets easier access :)

Common problem with Discovery. Mine was stuck solid when I first got it. Apparently the previuos owner didn't know what it was for and never used it.

I use it a lot

Strip out the bits and give 'em a good clean, oil/grease, then use it or lose it
