Being americans I was thinking it probably went over the side.

That's simply incredible
I've seen footage of the JATO'd C-130 & that's also amazing

i tell wot did impress me i was sent out to afgahnistan in a C17 and that had todo a tactical landing and for a thing that size it was short of amazing and yes my stomach was left behind and the 4 tonners we had chained in the back where giving it some serious leaning and straining
-
yea i can relate to that looking at the side of a scimiter tank as it stains the chains and looks like its sliding towards you
-
Yep
Did the TAC landing thing when I was an Air Cadet too. They were putting them down on the white lines at the end of the runway at Lyneham!
And if you think they are low over Knighton, go up to Staylittle, near here. They fly over there, below the tree tops, with the back door open, sitting on the back having a fag!!!

Further North we tend to look down at them as they fly below us.
The jets are the same. Not so much these days as they tend to train 'Foreign' pilots.
In the weeks before the first Gulf War a lot of tactical training went on in the skies above us and 24 Herculies flying low in formation is a sight to see.

It seems you guys have a soft spot fot the Herc. :D
-
yea nice little beast it is. The best thing i can remember about them is the shower curtain in the corner that is the toliet  .
But i have to say is the lancaster bomber just to hear those four merlins firing up and the sight of one in the sky or at the end of a runway 8)
