Title: Help... Where can you get spekers to fit my Disco
Post by: Big Rich on June 13, 2004, 21:49:08
I have a 1991 200 Tdi and need new front spekers.    I know they are 13cm but the depth is a problem with after market spekers. :?   My head unit it a Sony Md Changer with 4 x 50w outputs. Where can I get spekers to fit that will handle the watts? :?:

Most head units rarely put out 50 watts!   they normally mannage about 16 watts.
Speakers need to be driven and if they say 50 watts output then get an amp that can push out a little over 50 watts so your speakers can be driven properly.
Its like a hifi system and the speakers say 100 watts and you buy an amp that is 50 watts ? you wont be giveing the speakers the correct power and you will be under driveing them.
As for the disco speakers go to your local car audio shop and show them the speakers, they should be able to find some decent quality ones that will fit your disco.
Stock speakers are normally rubbish and need to be replaced by quality ones, and then you will hear sounds you have never noticed before.
Most people just have a pair of quality speakers in the front and a sub in the back for bass, the speakers in the front will be loud inuf for the front and rear passengers.
Im doing the same but ive got two pairs of 6-9s and an amp to drive the speakers properly, later i will get a sub and just have a front pair of quality speakers.
Hope this helps

the front door speakers on mine are 10cm not 13

you need to take into consideration the cover for the speaker too and the depth it can take..

these are the ones i fitted

Post by: konadbn on June 17, 2004, 21:09:00
Hi there - I also have a Sony thats 4x50w and my JBL's are rated at 50w but they still dont sound great ( I only have a set in the frount door's) I have not conected the tweeters ( if thats what you call the ones at the top of the door's) I am looking for some thing to replace them and also to replace the ones at the back on the pillars by the back door.

Any one got any good idea's for these?

Thanks

If your wanting to replace the speakers then a good make to test would be Alpine.
Ive talked to a lot of people and nearly 90% have alpine installed audio systems.
In your disco you have four speakers and two tweeters, the tweeters produce the treble frequencies like high hats and high ranges and the rest prodcue the bass frequencies like kicks and bass.
If your tweeters are not connected ? then your system will sound poor, but you can replace the tweeters for better ones and also replace the stock speakers in your disco.
If you can take the speakers out and go to your local car audio shop and ask them for a good quality set like alpine that will fit your disco.
Also when you turn your system up and it seems to distort ? its not distorting its becouse your system hasant got inuf power to power them.
Its always better to get an amp just above the speaker imput rateing so it can power them properly and then when you have an amp ? you will notice a bigg difference in volume and sound.

Hi Daren, I have heard my JBL's in a car but they were with a 6 speeker set up so I know they are well equipped for the job. They only really distort neer the top end of the head units range and if the supper base is on    I need to find some form of tweeter to fit and compliment my JBL's - they are 75w  2 ways ( they only just fit in the door's - when the windows are all the way down the glass tuches the magnets inside the door ) thing is there is not much room at the top of the door to replace the stock speekers - I am not using them as they cones have had it. The only option to me is to leave them in and put tweeters some other place insted of the door.

Many thanks for your imput.

i have fitted replacement speakers into my j reg 200tdi 3 door , i just went into halfords and bought some sony explodes which fitted straight in with no modifications and the sound is excelent .  in the rears i am going to put in up grade speakers from a fiat bravo / brava , i fitted some into a suzuki alto and the sound was awsome , they will be mounted into mdf and being high up in a disco in the back should also give a good bass sound. i would think that they wouldnt be too expensive either . mine were free as i worked for the local dealer . i hope this may help you. idea .
