just wondering,
when the cam belt snaps on a 300 tdi does it do any damage?
natt

The cambelt operates the cam, which opens and closes the valves.....
If it breakes it can leave a valve 'open', and if the engine is still running (being turned by the gearbox), the piston head can 'clout' the valve and put it through the head and even the bonnet if hit hard enough.
Is that enough damage to put you off breaking one?

oh well,
i know some cars don't do any damage but they are few and far between,
was hoping this was gonna be one,
had the new belt for 6 months, just can't be @rsed to do it,
thanks,

I can't think of any :?
If you break other belts there will be no damage, you would just loose something such as power steering, or the alternator, or air-con*
But a CAMbelt I would have thought was disasterous on any vehicle.
*I'm talking in general here not Discovery specific

Some engines have a recess in the piston where a valve would never make contact with the piston.

if the belt breaks on a tdi it will either bust the rockers or/& bend the pushrods,
thats normally about it

thanks for the replies,
was hoping for wanderers idea to be for a 300,

Like posted on the NE4x4 site..........change the belt if you have a spare.......not a bad job to do on a 300  not worth the trouble and down time.
-
If it saves a partial strip down or a complete engine, I think you may find its worth it.
If you dont know when it was last done, better to be same than bang, clatter
-
Cam belt failure is usually terminal for the valve and rocker gear and can also cause extensive damage to the head and pistons.
No excuses for not changing the belt - if goes and you have replacement to hand you can quite rightly call yourself a prat.
Get it done and don't be lazy or you deserve it to fail.
Rest assured it will wreck your top end sooner or later.

mine bent the pushrods, but mine didnt snap the belt.....ooooo no it cuddnt do that....no lets the cam go bi bi's in to the block

my old pinto engined ford cortina bust a cam belt and the valves missed the pistons!! - so theres one engine!
