i have a problem with the series 3 it overheats after about 2 miles i have taken the stat out and the water pump is working but still over heats :evil:

faulty gauge?? is it ACTUALLY overheating?

Had a simliar problem with my temp gauge.Telling me it was overheating when in fact it was an earth problem all along.Same happend with my fuel gauge reading full when i only put 10 pounds worth of fuel in again bad earth 8)

Check the top and bottom hoses to see how hot they are, could point to rad, or stuck stat

it is a new rad and all the pipes are getting really hot think i will have to order a head gasget and see if that cures it

Is it steaming or just showing hot on the temp gauge? If it was the head gasket you'd expect to see some oil in the water and/or mayonnaise in the rocker cover/oil filler and/or the overflow bottle would keep filling up as the pressure built up. Have you replaced rad cap? You say it's got a new rad, did you have the heater set to fully hot when you refilled it? You can get an airlock if you don't do this. I had a similar overheating (steaming) problem with my S3, and replaced rad cap as a start to no avail. Kept filling up, kept steaming out (after about 2 miles). I was filling rad to just cover the fins each time. The last time it did it, I left it and didn't refill, several weeks later, no problems. It seems to have found it's own 'level'. Temp now normal. My drive has a very slight slope, so it may have given a falsely low level when I topped it up. The excess just steamed off.

aint a loose earth strap form engine to earth?
i had this and it was the problem never know

before you change the head gasket, scrounge a compression tester, if all 4 pots are the same , look elsewhere! Is your rad clogged with mud? Electric fan working? Have you reverse flused the rad, this usually shifts a load of sludge,

Is the Rad cap the correct pressure rating or an off the shelf halfords jobbie?
Worth checking.

the rad cap came with the new rad i have done the head gasget and flushed out all the water pipes and the rad i still have the old rad top i will try that did not realise that it would create a over heating problem really hope that it is sorted somehow

I don't want to be the bearer of bad news ....But I had the same problem and did the rad and the head gasket and the flush plus all the other stuff I could think of . I even had the head pressure tested to see if there was an internal crack . All to no avail . In the end it was a porous liner on no. 3 bore . For me , it was a recon short motor and swap all the bits . I hope you can get it sorted .
As an after thought , there was never any oil in the water or water in the oil . took me weeks to pin down the problem ......Al

Are you sure the water pump is working?
My landy started running warm and it was because the key that held the crank pulley in place had broken, so it wasnt spinning properly, and hence not turning the water pump!
Dude is right about the cap too!. Replacing the radiator cap on my 101 stopped it from overheating! (on his suggestion too i think!)

The impellors on the pump can chorode away, making it not so effective at pumping the fluid round the engine

got it all back together still no improvment going to change the water pump if that dont change anything then will be looking for another engine

its done and all working flushed it out again and put another pump in all seems okay now thanks for all your help
