These what you are after?

If your vehicle is pre 1980 you don't actually need one for mot.

the 'vehicle identity number' plate which is the plate landrover fitted when the vehicle was new. MOT mechanics check this against your log book on MOT's, it is also supposed to be stamped onto the chassis but i never found this either.

i asked one of the mechanics that and he said it would be fine, i happened to be talking to the other guy and he said no it had to be a proper one otherwise if VOSA (aka pain in the arse) pull you up it could get a bit tricky.(?)

I don't know the in's & out's of it but i took a 1958 s11 for mot about 18 months ago. It had had a bulkhead swap and the vin plate had gone AWOL. After about 20 mins looking in his testing bible, he said pre 1980 it's not an mot requirement. That is not to say that it is not a VOSA requirement though.

that some good news, that last thing i want is to be messing about waiting to drive the vehicle ive spent so long restoring.

you could stamp the chassis yourself
-
A couple of years back, the Series 3 club had blank VIN plates for sensible money. Might be worth dropping them a line.
-
You could do what lots of people do and simple stamp a small peice of alluminium with all the details as per a 'normal' plate, and pt it where it supposed to be.

i think i will just stamp a bit of aluminium, if the test station will accept it.
but it might same some future agro if i can get a proper one, but not paying through the nose for it though.
thanks for the replies everyone.
