I fancied having a go at a diy one, something out of stainless steel, so I could practice the old mig welding

Is it just the gas and wire that are different for SS?

more or less, but with tig you can adjust the weld temp independently to  to suit the rate your filling at so you dont scorch the stainless. Good article on it here..

YES.........i made mine , used plastic drain pipe to run along inside of wing , cut hole in wing  (screen end ) and then used flexible exaust pipe up the side of screen and then fitted a mushroom top.........

Imade mine! although you could say i cheated slighty!! from the airbox i used re-inforced plastic duct pie through the factory hole in the inner wing then onto a length of straight exhaust pipe(slightly squashed in the vice to make oval)along the top of inner wing to a secondhand defender snorkel and related flexi tube that i got for £30!
just make yourself a template out of card so as you can lay it onto the wing before you start cutting!

ay up,go to a stainless exhaust makers, get 30" piece of stainless zorst (2.5" dia) get them to weld a bracket on while you are there, also put a bend in the top (so it looks neat)then go to a hose maker (pirtec) and get a piece of hose long enough, put a hole in wing(2.75 dia)and pull the inner wing liner out and connect it up and bobs your uncle it takes about 2hrs and saves you about £180.00 and looks as good as a mantec snorkle. It really is easy, ive done a disco 200tdi and two rangies so far.

I made the snorkel on my series land rover.  Probably no use for the disco but there is some info at http://www.landyworld.co.uk/diylandroversnorkel.htm

Looking to buy a disco now so I might be making another one soon!

i coppied disco chris after seeing his at www2 except i used a few pieces of drain pipe bends from air box through original hole in inner wing on to a piece of about 2" diameter semi flexible hose up to a defender 90 snorkel from rebels minus the wing plate, hole in wing carefully cut ( measure twice, cut once) up a piller - job done, looks great, less vunerable than a safari style one a and a dam site cheaper
