Title: Custom Exhaust
Post by: unknownmanxman on February 19, 2006, 18:49:19
Hi, i have a 200tdi defender 90.
I want to bring the exhaust out, ideally through the front of the rear wing, just behind the passenger door, but the other option is to bring it out through the wing behind the passenger rear wheel arch. How do i do this?

My exhaust system already has no front silencer, and the exhaust finishes above the rear axle, and only the little silencer is left.

Thanks

Does your landy sound nice and beefy without the front silencer off? saw a landy this weekend that sounded well nice and beefy just wondering whether its from taking the front silencer off because i fancy doing the same. Don't know about making custom exhaust, although you might want to put some chequerplate around where the exhaust comes out to keep all the fumes and soot off the paintwork.

Haha,

Well, with only the little silencer left there is a definate roar to the landy!

When i took the front box out, i noticed some performance difference, the landy was much quicker!

Thanks

What did you replace the front silencer with, did you have to get a piece specially made?

my tdi only has the diddy wee silencer at the back, sounds fairly quiet inside but if you go down a street lined with house's with the window open it sounds sweet with a nice rip

i made my exhaust up from front to back out of standard bits choped up with straight lengths where the silencers should be

I just went down to my local garage and got some exhaust pipe of the right bore and cut it to length and welded it in...

can you get an off the shelf centre section without box with the end thingies? I guess I could make one out of spares though but a bolt in off the shlef would be easier :-)  Does it really make any diff to the standard 90 system?

ISTR the disco boxes were straight through anyway - are the 90 ones like that?

So is it legal to be that noisy

yep
as its not noisy at any other time apart from when the turbo spools up

TBH u dont even notice it inside,it stays the same note constantly

Had a closer look at mine today. There are 3 boxes in mine, is the last one a cat?

ok, tdi's donot have a cat fitted to them,

the disco's have a partical colector which catches the soot etc it contains no fancy metals like a petrol cat does,

you can junk 1 box for a slight increase in breathing,2 gives a nice rip & 3 makes it sound minted especially when the turbo spools up

i'm interested to nkow how power is affected by doign this... ians exhaust dropped off just after the turbo and he lost most of the power.. wonder what happens if yuo remove silencers or shorten the length or even why that happened in the first place.

Gonna do this myself taking middle section out and strait throught to lev back box aparentley fine at MOT times and sounds sweet..Dirty Girty has done it and it sounded great and a tad more BHP due to less gases being trapped in mid box

So from that I take it I don`t need 2 out of the 3 boxes, so when one breaks I can just bin it and put a pipe in its place?
