Title: Power Steering Fluid

Hi All,

the steering on my 1986 3.5L V8 now groans at me first thing in the morning. I've got it booked into Wicken 4 Wheel Drive next week as it might be a little dangerous but in the meantime I'd thought I'd check the fluid level.

When I eventually got the lid off (using a filter clamp and much elbow grease) the design inside was not what I was expecting. I've never been able to get hold of a Haynes manual for this model so I was referring to the one from my old TD.

Inside there is like an inner coil but no marks for hi and low levels - can anybody help me. What fluid should I put in?  :?  :?  :?

It has a new drop-arm in the summer.

If your resivior is the type with the filter in, then fill it about an inch from the top. You should use Power Steering Fluid, or Auto-transmission fluid. :)

Mine does the same in the mornings. Im just used to it.

Do not let it groan if the oil is low it will hurt you sooner or later, the pumps are not cheap, easy to change but hurts your wallet

If it leaks keep a regular check on the level

Yep, forgot to say that there is fluid all over the drive and the carpark at work.

we have the same issue with ours and want to know why it has a strange reservoir and if any type of bottle will do as a replacement.

We also found that by topping it up with STP anti-steering leak fluid, it has drastically reduced the leak to almost nothing

That should be not so bad, unless its pushing it out, check the pipes and clips see if any are perished or cracked, also the reservoir may be cracked on the plastic

The other question, it doesn't matter about the resevoir, any will do if they hav the correct fittings for the pipes, it only sucks out one and pushes back through the other pipe

......it did hurt! Recon steering box - quite painful in the wallett but at least we did not end up having an accident because of it.
