Title: Steering Lock
Post by: BigA on February 14, 2006, 08:20:29
Had the Disco now for about 6 weeks, found most problems and ironed them out (before i start modding and creating more   ) but the most annoying issue i have is the steering lock. It keeps jamming, when you put the key in it wont turn, i have to turn the wheel until the lock engages, and give it a rattle a few times, then wiggle the key and it then turns (usually involves some strong language too).

So before i go and buy a new ignition lock, is this a usual problem? has anyone else had the problem? and most importantly, does anyone know how to fix it??

Cheers for now,

Andy

don't suppose you grab  (or knock) the wheel when getting in or out do you, mine does it if i move the steering wheel while hauling my fat arse in

I,ve seen this on a couple of friends disco,s i think in the end 1 replaced with new and the other fitted a s/hand one , the problem just got worse with one of them until it was taking about 20 mins each time to get the ignition on so the barrel had to be replaced

Yes, unfortunately its abind with these unit when they play up, if its the lock barrel I believe they can be removed without taking the whole unit out, but normally its a whole unit replacement, not too expensive, disco ones are the sam,e as the rrc's so that helps, just need to get the snappped head bolts out, I lost my temper with mine and battered it out as I was stuck away from home

:? no, i have to haul my fat stomach past mine, but its definitely not this that's causing it, as id makes no difference if steering lock on or not, sometimes it plays up sometimes it doesn't.

the key for my ignition is different to all the doors, so i am hopeing somebody has replaced once before already, so it wont be so bad  :(

mine does it once in a while too. It only happens when I am away from home and normaly in a car park where everyone can see me struggling!

I havent done anything yet appart from begging to my fairy god mother to rectefiy the problem by itself.

I did hear of one person whoes steering lock totaly went when they were parked on a beech car park and the tide came in. all they could do was put the steering wheel lock on (one of those anti theft bars ) and break the lock and tow it off the beech fast.
