Its not often i ask for help but know i am totally stumped.
sometimes, not always i get a very bad vibration from the front drivers side wheel.
I have done the following.
1] Changed the wheel/tyre
2] Replaced wheel bearings - old ones were OK
3] replaced swivel hub brearings- old ones were OK
4] replaced steering damper
5] checked all the track rod ends all seem to be OK
I have added and removed shims from the swivel bearings but there was no difference.
tonight as a last ditch effort i am going to run her without the front propshaft on(grasping at straws now)
Any advice would be greatly accepted.

cv joint??? have you tried taking it out and seeing if it feels notchy, rather than swiveling smoothly.

I checked the CV when i replaced the bearings and it looked and felt OK.
I have had a 3 inch lift on for the past 3 years without any problems.
this wobble only started within the last 5 weeks.
The last thing i have done is replace the front prop UJ's about a week later i had this wobble. :twisted:

Panhard rod / radius arm bushes? :?
Have you done the swivle pin bearings & wheel bearings on both sides or just the drivers? May be worth checking the passenger side just in case. :wink:

I have done bearing on both sides (thinking alike)
I checked the radius arm bushes etc and foung a lot of loose bolts but nothing major worn.
I tightened all the bolts but still get a wobble every now and again.
The strange thing is its not constant. It will be Ok at 50mph one miniute but whobble like hell later.

Piglet is doing the same. Check your A-Frame ball-joint.....

Id agree with panhard rod bushings.
double check steering box, and panhard rod mount bolts onto chassis.
You got an old camcorder?
Use a couple of ratchet type straps and fasten in onto the chassis(recording) and see if you can see movement anywhere.
Just one last thought, Have you checked the drivers side front shock absorber and bushes.........?

Try another set of wheels/tyres on the front?
Or any damage to the wheel, also the tyre for blebs or other abnormal markings

Do you thonk the a frame ball joint would show up as a wobble at the front ? Goth thing had a new one about 5 years ago..
I'll check it tonight though.

i took off the radius arm and panhard rods all the bushes looke OK, although i did have a few loose bolts it hasn't made any difference.

I put on another set of front wheels.. still the same. I thought a wheel weight had come off at first and had the wheels balenced but that didnt cure it.
I thought it might be an air lock in the steering box so i will bleed it tonight and see if it makes a difference, but i haven't been near the steering box in months.

you said you changed the front prop uj's??
did you remember to keep all parts of the prop in the same orientation on re-assembly???
best to mark all parts uniquely so you know how they were orientated.
they are balanced as a unit once assembled., thats what the little welded on piece of metal is for.

I'd say damper too then, check that the rubber bushes on the damper are compressed correctly too as the movement will be very slight.

I had the same thing.
I removed the weights from my wheels and I have not had any problems in 12 months. Might be worth a try.

could you have a buckled or damaged wheel or a deformed tyre (egg shape)

I tryed a different set of tyres with no change.
I run it today without the front prop - no change.
I did notice that if the road is smooth it is ok but hit a small lump/hole then it shakes like hell, but saying that i flew over a "traffic calming hump" and it was fine , no shaking.
I have't tryed bleeding the power steering, thats tomorrows job.

interesting and annoying problem.with the setup i have (4"lift at front i have no major problems at all with 33"tyres on.............
however when i put 36"tyres on i have a serious front wobble when turning right on a roundabout or winding road..
almost like bump steer but with no bump..
the steering wheel violently reverberates left and right...
i still have that round weight attached to the front axle and have been meaning to remove it...
now i can erradicate a ashock absorber for this as i have twin shocks..
are tour front turrets secured correctly??

That really sounds like your swivel pin preload isn't correct. I know you've tried adding and removing shims but did you get it to the correct preload?
And have you checked that the swivel pin bearings are still intacked, you may have had one collapse! :?

I replaced the swivel bearings but didnt use a spring balence to set the preload.
The turrets are new but it was shaking befoe i changed them
I will get the wheel alignment done this week and see if that helps.

When I replaced the steering damper on mine everything was fine until I hit a cat's eye on the motorway - got an almighty wobble which only went after slowing down a bit.
I checked the damper and tightened the nuts up on each end and haven't had a repeat since.
Did you prime the damper fully before you fitted it too?

The doughnut on the diff is to cure a propshaft noise, you can safely bin that. The dampers you do need are bolted to the bottom swivel pin and extend below the steering arms. I've had a similar wobble and never got to the bottom of it.

I have put on a new set of BFG At on new rims on mine and so far so good. :D I still need to test them on the patch of the Manc way that caused me problems. :cry:
I have done everthing you have done and it was driving me nuts till I put these tyres on. :shock:

find a tree......and drive in 2 it lol :D no only jokin but solves most problems with landies....just creates a new 1....got no landie den. i had this problem with my disco, i had a huskey on the front for a year or so...took it off anf going down the road hit a pot hole and the disco swerved violently, steering wobbling all over the place slowed do 2 50 and it stopped. i had the same problem until i fitted the husky back on after it had come back from being repaired and it solved the problem. u shed any weight off the front end recently ?

mine does the same but i never had any weight on the front end have replaced steering pump, wheel bearings, CV joints, and track rod ends, drop arm and ball joint
what have i not checked or replaced

I think I know of the wobble you mean. It is fine and then you hit a small pot hole and the whole steering wheel wobbles and makes a noise with it too. I had it on my rangie. Along with that and the fact it wouldnt start properly when the engine was awarm and you had to rev the engine whack it into drive and get over 10mph quickly I sold it asap. Luckily it didnt do the wobble thing on the test drive.

i havent heard any noises along with the wobble

|Put some new wheels on Julies TDi last night and hey presto, that now shakes when you hit a pothole too :evil:

Is the bush at the upper end of the panhard rod in good fettle? Seem to recall a few racer who have experienced this problem. It can cause the axle to shift laterally.
It's a long shot, but that seems to all we've left to explore - you've been pretty darn thorough!
