Title: Flickering red light on instrument panel
Post by: Rangie3.0LtrDan on January 17, 2006, 18:24:59
Right, another question!

The light above the oil light has been flashing lately, am slightly concerned as am sure its the parking brake light for an auto, mine isnt an auto btw.

The symbol is - ((!)) ((P))

If anyone could shed some light i would be grateful, it comes on at low revs and if i turn a right hand corner!

Cheers

Dan

Either that, or does yours have Brake Pad sensors?? Your pads might need changing if so. :)

actualy,it might not be low fluid & i dout it will have wear sensors but it might have the wiring that is ocasionally un shorting as you go along the road

mines 1990 and that has the pad sensors... but its an orange light near the bottom of the cluster...you can tell if it has sensors by looking on the drivers side discs... theres a pair of wires come off one of the pads... the red light works from the handbrake... and also is low fluid level
cheers

Check pads...free and easy. They are probably worn. Low fluid sensor is in brake fluid reservoir cap. When pads are low, the fluid can dip..and the light will flash.

As I say, cheap to check! DO NOT just top up fluid.

((P)) is the handbrake switch could be simple as the handbrake isnt releasing all the way.

Well worth checking the pads tho and also the condition of the discs whilst the wheel is off.

Right, handbrake is going down all the way, pads seem to have stuff on, but there are no sensors, although the discs are worn so going to replace them!

I may have missed something but was the brake fluid resorvoiur low ?
If it is its possible that you have a leak in the braking system.  I had the same symptoms and it turned out to be a small 'pinprick' hole in the rear brake pipe.   I would check the brake pipes just in case.

I've had the Disco for almost eleven years now and have changed the pads lots & lots of times, sometimes down to the metal but never had a problem with the warning light as a consequence.   I haven't got sensors.

Cheers,

Jubby

Brake fluid reservoir is full, and i havent filled it, its remained full the whole time.  The light flashes while idling and while going round all corners.

if your moving the gearstick and it comes on it would seem to indicate a chafing wire earthing out somewhere :?

sounds to me like the handbrake switch

it make have moved a bit so when the handbrake is all the way down its only just making contact

If it is a chaffed wire i'll put money on it being under the centre console

Removing the light would be an MOT failure, I think!
