can someone tell me what the going rate is for getting the cambelt done... reason im asking is have had a few quotes between the £250 and 300 mark...thought it was steep so feeling the ground...can feel a diy job coming on!!
cheers

I would have said a couple of hundred is fair. If you supply the parts. I wouldnt tackle it yourself, if you dont have the correct knowledge, or tools.
There are a couple of professional tools you will need. One is a special spanner to get the fan off. The other is a good torque wrench.
Not the easiest DIY job
Im lucky, its my game. :)

Kev, depending on when you are doing it, if you get stuck i could give you a hand, have done a few in the past. like has been said a couple of the tasks can be tough, removing the pulley bolt and pulley, but upto now i've managed with a little help from my friends, then again that's wot it's all about, helping each other......

My local place does it for around £150-180 ish bring your own parts
They are diesel specialists
-
neil thanks a lot... may take you up on that offer...only thing bothering me about doing the job is actually being able to undo the crank bolt....sposed to be a real tight un!!
hobbit thats a lot better than around here as you can probably tell!
-
nearly forgot.... neil if i do it myself which im def leaning towards wont be til it warms up a bit outside!!!
cheers

As Neil says, its relatively easy, as I saw, but then again the pulley and nut were ok. To tell the truth mine was not done more than 20k ago we reckon. So was relatively easy
If its a swine to release just bad luck then, name of the game with these vehicles

well, for garages ...
I got quoted at £100 for mine, and should the tensioner and pulley not have needed replacing it would have been that, sadly they did so it ended up at £148.
Still, that's in lancashire (contact ninety for more information if needed) but I would have thought you should be able to find similar locally.

I know two local garages I'd trust to do mine, PM/email/sms me for info.

i,ve just had 2 quotes for a 300tdi of £215+vat at one place and £250+vat at another

Where was that mate . . . local in Wakefield? - pm if you like
-
£27-50 for parts
Labour, four hours of my own time  Worst part was the long bolts around the waterpump, had to be very careful not to snap 'em as they were corroded in

Kev just let me know when and i'll do my best!! If you want you could bring it to my house and do it here when it warms up(maybe 1 Saturday) that way if we struggle i have a few friends nearby to help. Not onlt that but it will be easier for me to get any tools needed from work on the day,
regards Neil...
