Title: Nerds and Truckers
Post by: thermidorthelobster on December 09, 2005, 17:08:39
(reposted as the board gremlins ate this first time round)

It occurred to me that most of us here either seem to drive trucks (or other large vehicles) for a living, or work in IT.  Apart from Bush Tucker Man, of course, who works for the NHS.

Anybody want to prove me wrong?

David (sells software)

I'm an accountant (yawn   ).

I'd have thought an almost as popular question would be who does/did work for the armed forces, lots of people here seem to have been connected somehow.

Hmmmm..

Well....I "work with computers" :-)

Most of you will, if you own a mobile phone, come across one of my systems ;-) (especially if you have a Vodafone or Vodacom phone!)

Or if your TV/Video/Electrical thing/Washer etc etc goes wrong ... well, we've got that base covered too :-)

....and if you don't own a mobile phone/tv/etc then the chances are one of our systems might sell you one.....gosh! If you own an Orange phone ... you may well have a receipt from one of my EPOS systems <giggle>

That's enough selling I think <grin>

i am a landscape gardener

although i am preparing a business plan for my new business.

i will sell my body to extremely rich and beautiful ladies between the age of 18 and 36.

as the turnover will be so high,i will of course have to be vat registered straight away.

as a contingency plan,if the takings are not as forecast then i will diversify and accomodate an age group of up to 45.

the various tools and extensions that i will possibly need to aquire will of course be offset against my tax.

a great amount of funds will be paid into my personal pension and i shall retire after my third year in business.

a happy man :D

Wasn't that the building which recently burnt to the ground after the electric system shorted out?  :?  Only joking...

My claim to fame is that my best man Greg designed the mud guards on the current Defender (yes, the ones which rub on the exhaust - it was the exhaust people's fault of course) and the bonnet release catch.

spent 4 years training to be an engineer, then promptly went into retail for the best  end of a decade. been on the tills, manager and auditor (copper with a calculator).  Spent time in car sales, as a mechanic doing servicing and repairs and currently spend my time working in my mates bodyshop stripping & fitting.  Still do a bit of retail - another mate owns a petrol station & I run that when his manager is on holiday.

Time for a change again soon - moving up to Lincs/Leics in the next 6 months which means finding a job up there.Anyone need a dogsbody?? :D

I've been driving trucks in various guises for the last 15 years and spent 15 years before that driving buses and coaches, have been pretty much all over this country and lots of bits in europe, I'd love to get off the road but at the moment it isn't possible to earn a decent living anywhere else with my qualifications, (none apart from vocational licences).
I'm expecting to be forced into other employment eventually because I'm diabetic and as soon as the DVLA hear the word "insulin", they snatch your vocational licences and your livelihood away from you, nice eh?

I am from another planet sent here to try an understand the human race. The males of your species are simple enough but the females I have still to figure out? While here I have done various jobs to keep my cover including driving a 7.5 tonner for 3 1/2 years, I have also weilded spanners for a wage and worked as a freelance Grips in the film & TV industry mounting cameras on things for programs such as Top Gear and and Only Fools and Horses. On your plannet I have also done some engineering and even worked as a welder fabricator for a few years. At the moment I am working in the motor industry testing ECU's and supplying garages with technical products and informaton as well as service products and garage equipment.

Still I know very little about the female of your kind even though I have been what you call "MARRIED" for many years!!

By the way best job ever was pilot of a Valurian deep space core mining ship running the Kalrian blockades on the outer edge of the Silisan quadrant.     (a sort of truck driver)

its what used to be thought of as surgical appliances.
range from hospital/orthopaedic footwear, insoles for almost anything and can get to the very serious looking halo ring and vests (the ones like daniel beddingfield had to wear for ages) to immobilise the neck.
great aye!

I'm a toolmaker by trade.  Injection moulds, jigs and fixtures and press tools.  Drifted into special purpose machinery in my early 20's and spent 20yrs traveling this green and pleasant land. (When it was).  Now work as a maintenance engineer (chargehand) for paper manufacturer.  Also part time digger driver, fencer, paver and anything else.  Looking forward to retirement if Blair will let me.

Well from the look of the poll so far truckers ain't winning but the nerd's are even lower down the heap

So It looks like us "Doing something totally different" gang are in the lead then  :D

We mend broken buildings, believe me if you think you can break a LandRover that's the tip of the iceberg compared to mother nature .........  or a truck running into your house .............  etc

When you go to a 2 storey Terrace house with a basement and attic, find a hairline crack in the basement................

gets a bit wider as you look up .......................

Then you go into the attic and can walk through to next door ........

By comparison a stuck diff lock switch isn't a big problem  :)

But it makes life interesting  :!:

In this particular case sticky backed plastic and string wasn't quite enough

I've worked in comms for the last 19 years for a well-known comms company (not BT !), covered all sorts of radio, fibre, PDH, SDH, modems, bridges, routers, switches.

Would love to get out of the industry and do something else, but I reckon a certain little incident in Hemel will keep me occupied for the next few months !!!!
