I have just read Jan LRO magazine. Page 187 top right) To my HORROR I have just discovered I do not have the approprite licence for a 12 seater 110. Wose still catagory D1 (which is a pcv catagory) I cannot apply for beacuse of a medical restriction on my licence (diabetes on insulin). What do I do! My first thought is to fit a cubby box and remove 1 bench seat leaving 8 seats which is allowed for my licence. Has anyone any other ideas. Or is this not enough!
Bloody DVLA !
:cry:

dont think you need to change your licence unless you carry paying passengers i thought?
or when you do a public service, like carrying a bunch of people like scouts or something, then you need to be covered but other than that if its for strictly private use you should be fine.

THis is the advice from dvla.. I only have cat b and may not apply for d1 beacause of medial reasons....what do ya think?
EXEMPTED PASSENGER CARRYING VEHICLES
Holders of a full category B (car) driving licence may drive any of the vehicles listed below :
a passenger-carrying vehicle manufactured more than 30 years before the date when it is driven
and not used for hire or reward or for the carriage of more than 8 passengers;
a minibus with up to 16 passenger seats provided the following conditions are met ;
the vehicle is used for social purposes by a non commercial body but not for hire or
reward ;
the driver is aged 21 ;
the driver has held a car (category B) licence for at least 2 years ;
the driver is providing the service on a voluntary basis ; and
the minibus maximum weight is not more than 3.5 tonnes or 4.25 tonnes including any specialist equipment for the carriage of disabled passengers
if the driver is aged 70 or over, is able to meet the health standards for driving a D1 vehicle.

owt over 12 seats bud, youre ok on your licence

I'm Diabetic too, and so i would fall under the same problems you are having, there is a restriction on our licences that says we cannot carry fare paying passengers (not sure about taxis :? ) but certainly no buses and no passenger aircraft.
Damn, that's my concorde pilot's career out of the window :evil:

As long as you passed test before Jan 1st 1997 you should have D1 on your licence [ D1 is up to 16 seats ]You wont be able to drive Taxi as your medical will pick up you diabetes, That was first question I was asked when I took my Taxi medical

I would seem I am off the hook........ I have taken advice from a reliable source. Provided I dont use it for hire and reward I`m the right age etc.
Thanks for everyones input. I will write to LRO and put them straight when I have recovered from the heart attack I nearly suffered :!:
-
Sent my letter to LRO wonder if they will publish :?:
-
Glad you got sorted. LRO are incorrect as you have found. Anyone passing before 1997 will have the so-called 'grandfather rights' to D1 (minibus, restricted) E (large trailer) and C1 (7.5 tonne comercial) and as I'm aware you can drive these catagories for work but not to carry passengers for payment, so you can get a job driving a delivery truck or council minibus. The problem often arrises that for the insurance some councils now run an internal test scheme, my mate has to take them, 3 to be exact, minibus, minibus and trailer, minibus and large trailer. Best bit is the waiting list for the test is longer then the chit lasts :roll:

We are having a major problem with this in the Army Cadets.. Most of us Younger instructors passed our test post 1997 (me by a couple of months!! :evil: ) so they are finding it harder and harder to bus kids around.
Although we are a voluntary unit. MOD insurance also requires us to have a D1 to be insured in "Green Fleet". We have found a way around it in "White Fleet" (Minibuses) by something called a "Permit 19". Which is vehicle specific rather than driver.
Dont ask me what a Permit 19 is though... and we still have to do a familiarisation and a Tick Test before we get our FMT600 (MOD Driving Permit)
