Where do the nice straight un messed with Defenders get sold? They seem as rare as hens teeth.
-
Mainly at the main dealers trade-ins though you can find them at Auctions, from leccy boards water boards etc, or ex MOD, hope this helps,
-
Thinking of going to Brightwells at Leominster, has anybody been?
-
Ive noticed that alot of the dealers get hold of completly standard Defenders, fit a bit of chequer plate and some different wheels and add loads extra to the asking price...
-
Places like SHB 4x4 (three dealerships in the UK). Their stock is all ex-hire, so often remarkabley untouched. The slightly more battered vehicles of theirs get sold off by other parties.
They're also one of the few places that seem to regularly offer 110 HTs (which are generally like rocking horse poop to obtain).
cheers

I went there a while back, so don't know exactly what its like now, but it seemed like everything that was good enough to generate any interest was going for top money. If you want to check out recent prices go to Brightwells website, they do a list of everything that went through prev auctions & how much they fetched.

Bought my Discovery from Leominster - paid proper money for it, but it was a good one.
If you are bidding against private buyers then the prices will go high, if you are bidding against the trade only, then you should be alright.
Personally, I'd be wary of alot of ex-hire, plant, site vehicles 'cause they have often had a hard life. I would however rate SHB to buy from, just be alert.
Generally the least messed with Defenders are sold privately or through dealers, although most of them are held on to by their original owners.

I'm with Jeff, on Brightwells. Stuff goes for in same cases a lot more than you could buy it in Autotrader, and you run the risk of buying a crock o' schweppes. To me it was more trouble than it was worth.
Best bet is to keep an eye on Autotrader and the newsgroups, forums etc, and be ready to strike quickly if something comes up.
-
I've been weighing up Brightwells for a few weeks now on the net, plenty of Discoverys,90 pick ups to choose from although hardtop 90's not so.
-
Go for a 90 pick-up as long as it's in good condition. Youcan then source a hardtop and sides, and a rear door to turn it into a hardtop. Sell the truck cab to recoup some of your costs. The truck cabs usually go for a lot less than a equivalent hardtop than it would cost to convert it.
Cheers

And unless Tim (muddyweb) still wants it, I've got a 90 roof and sides (roof has sunroof and alpines) available that were giong to go onto my 90 truck cab until it got nicked...
Cheers

I live quite close to Brightwells and have visited a couple of times. I'd say the LR worth having go for top dollar and you can certainly buy a crock. One I liked the look of didn't reach its reserve of about 2k and I went to look at it again as they operate a system where you can buy unsold items.
Well they were VERY helpful but the 200 TDI was chuffing away like a good 'un but there was no way you'd have known that at auction. You'd have bought a doggy TDI for too much money.
Locally to Leominster there are a coiuple of dealers who can be OK but you guys who are thinking of going there are quite a way away I think.

Yes your right i'm miles away,to far to come back empty handed,it's not really a viable option, trying not to buy work.
-
Not the right position to be in at an auction!
When I bought my 90 I had to go to London from Worcester area and I had also looked in Neath, Ross on Wye etc. To get a good vehicle you'll either pay for it in cash or time and travel and even then you can't be certain you've done well!

I bought my 110 from SHB at Castle Greasley and am very happy with it.

It's been worked but not abused and the biggest problem I've had so far was fitting a stereeo as it's the lowest spec station wagon ever made.

AFAIK Tim does still want it, but he's insanely busy just at the moment. If I remember I'll ask him later today when I get him to get bits for my motor :)
-
If you end up getting a truck cab, I've got a hard top with windows & an "as new" rear door that i'd swap for the cab & tail gate if its in good nik.
Jeff
-
Oh & its got front headlining with kenwood speakers. I'm not advertising it yet as I'm too busy with the 90 rebuild  (was going to advertise it with everything else when everythings finished) so it should be here for a while yet.

The Autotrader mags seem favourite, was to tight to buy any before. As a footnote where's all the checker plate come from that's appearing on Defenders these days, there seems to be a epidemic on Ebay.

Yep, thats where mine came from, I can't recommend them enough, he is a very good bloke, works on handshakes and common sense. Won't sell rubbish either.
-
Also my Uncle has just bought a late very very mint ex mod 300tdi 90 from Withams in Grantham but it wasn't cheap from what I can gather.

He's a 'friend of a friend' apparantly. didn't see an address on the site, he used to be down at Healey from what I've been told.
I know he used to have a couple of immaculate ex-Civil Defence Austin Gipsys as well.
-
I keep meaning to go here & have a look at their stock
http://www.marpleroadgarage.co.uk/
I quite like the look of the (1998) 'R' plated 35,000mile Coniston Green 90 they've got (last one on 'Stock List')
Usually they've got a few 110CSW's listed

Drakes had a tidy looking 90 on a m plate for £4750,i was tempted but it went before i could pull my finger out and do something about it.Is there VAT on his vehicles do you know?

There was no VAT on the Van i bought. Very good Bloke, doesn't give his address on his site cos he doesn't want passing trade. doesn't sell Disco's cos he doesn't want to deal with the folk that come to buy them and all his Landys come with a free coat of dust. Proper Northerner.

Proper Northerner.
You know i wish i had gone for that 90 now,Drakes seem to be highly recommended and he doesn't cover his vehicles with that awful checker plate rubbish!
