You know when you have one of those days....
Stripped the top end off Tigger's engine today with a view to changing the camshaft.
All going very well... an alarming amount of slack in the timing chain and wear on the timing gears. Again, no big issue, have got spares of them.
But........ the camshaft bearings are worn :-( Was hoping that they would be OK for another cam but I'm not happy with them...
So, I'm now of course wondering about the condition of the mains and big ends... this could end up as a complete rebuild.... and I need to be finished by Thursday !!
All good fun eh !

is this going to be another of those " and while thats off i,ll do that as well " jobs

You know me too well Neal :-)
I was thinking earlier about doing the bottom end bearings, maybe stripping and cleaning the heads, doing the crank oilseals, you know then I could put a new crank in... maybe up the capacity a bit... <grin>

Tim
see if Neil will let you have the engine from Piglet!
-
I've had one of those evenings, but should be a bit cheaper to fix, than you Tim.
Just replaced the heater matrix in the commuting car - Fiesta. It was being a pain with airlocks as I filled it back up and now I've sheared the bleed screw on the top hose.
Oh well, looks like I won't be going to the AWDC comp at Sidbury tomorrow then. Still probably just as well, I'd probably only end up pining to be competing myself.

What on earth would I want that for ? It's got a silly distributor on it

And Tim's V8 is nice and meaty too :) (unlike neil's spagetti)
-
Well... due to my slight concern over the wear on the cam bearings coupled with not being very happy about a bit of a rumble at tickover, I decided to bit the bullet and strip the thing.
So, now I have a V8 block, and a big pile of oily bits
As suspected the big ends and and mains are showing a fair bit of wear... so a full rebuild is on the cards !
All good fun 8)

Good luck Tim
Will you have it back together for Whaddon?

Ask me on Friday ;-)
A lot depends on being able to get the bits I need. Time will tell
-
Good luck with it Tim, I hope you get it all done OK.
-
Good Luck Tim, hope it goes well, we need you at the weekend

You could always bring that Toyota thingee if you've not flogged it yet

or nick on of the 'works' vehicles
But... just a quick update. The block went down to Lund engines today to get new camshaft bearings put in. After much fannying around, I decided that discretion was the better part of valour and let Steve put them in. That way I can concentrate on rebuilding the thing on Thursday when I get in the workshop.
So, all going well.. Tigger will be there on Friday :-)
-
jeez thats cutting it fine!
a works vehicle sounds like a good idea! - that green d44 td5 90 looks like it could be fun!
-
We like a bit of pressure :-)
Yeah, the 90 would be OK.. but it hasn't got a towbar.. and I'm not sleeping in a chuffing tent
-
Roo has a towbar, you can borrow that and I'll take the 90 up :D
-
Tim Burt wrote. "I'm not sleeping in a chuffing tent." Getting old Tim, lad?

It has to be quicker to fit a tow bar than rebuild an engine :D Just don't tell em, and take it off before you return it.
-
Tim its a lot easier to change a tow bar than an engine  Perks of the job 8)

Nice idea... but there appears to be a winch in the way

Hook the caravan to the winch, swap the rear cross member, weld a drop plate on. Get daz to tow the caravan. Lots of easy  solutions  Would be really nice to see that there 8)
-
Just think of all the good publicity D44 would get from the club, and I know we already spend a decent amount of money with D44 as a group :D
-
Please bring that car!!

Well, picked up the block today. Nice new camshaft bearings pressed in for me. He also gave it a good rinse in the parts washer and deglazed all the bores for me. (Saves me having to do it :-))
Assuming all the little shiny bits turn up tomorrow, we'll be away !
-
Any one work for the postal service to intercept the little shiny bits then he will have to take it  .
-
No, but I'm helping him rebuild his, so he'll most likely be on a pushbike :D
-
What towing the caravan   Nice one daz
-
No... Daz has the position of 'Spanner Monkey' and 'Parts Washer-upper' 8)

Sadly that one is outside of my field of expertise, Mrs Muddy will have to do that for us.
