Potentially am looking for a 90 but what i shte preferred engine 200tdi
or 300tdi ? What are the benefits of one over the other ?
-
Very little difference. 300 is a little quieter, the 200 is thought to be a tad stronger but both are brilliant.
-
200tdi's only seem to bend pushrods when the timing belt lets go

or rockers & the 300 is the same,
+ point of the 300 is you dont have to disturb the cooling system to change the timing belt, personally id have a 200 but might b looking at a 300 for a new toy

300 has a serpentine front end, which means that you get (generally) much less belt slippage, and it can handle a bigger alternator.
300 also produces a bit more torque.
-
you also on a 300 get a fancy accoustic rocker cover - making it look a bit smarter than a 200 when u lift the bonnet!!!
Also water pumps are cheaper on a 300
alternators are mounted higher masking them easier to change

I thought torque outputs were the same...
But in a Defender the 300Tdi makes more power..
200Tdi: 107 bhp
300Tdi: 111bhp
(but nothing that a mild 'tweak' wouldn't sort!!)
300Tdi will also have a disc braked rear axle (unless it is a very late 200Tdi).
A lot of people also prefer the R380 Gearbox in the 300Tdi to the LT77s in the 200Tdi.
I personally like both... but I think I'd go for a 300Tdi.

this is true
but I think I will save the extra grand or so and put up with a little more noise (ooo look I found some bonnet sound proofing in the shed that I havnt fitted yet), 4 less bhp (why did I fit that new intercooler?). I also have discs all round and a reverse gear where its meant to be :!: :!: :!: :!: :!: :P

Bob, very true!!!
