How big a job is it to swap a chassis over , i.e. old rotten one to a new galvernized one. on a series 3.

Its a big ish job. Body off engine out gearbox out axels off steering off. Wiring loom out of the chassis. ect ect. have you the time and space two chassis and all the body to place somewhere. I can do it at work for myself but it would take up 3 bays to do. Stuck bolts broken bolts must I say more. Not trying to put you off but its a big job to say the least.

GOOD LUCK...

Can be very frustrating   I started mine back in April and have been working on average 1 to 2 days a week since then - its not quite finished yet      Also you need to budget for the unexpected  . Costs around 60 quid just for new nuts and bolts aswell
Pics are here (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Andy%20the%20Landy/gallery/Rebuild)

Also you'll want to check the condition of the bulkhead before you start. It's not worth bolting a rotten bulkhead to a new chassis.

Pete.

Colin mate, I'd think again.

Its a huge job and needs loads of time mate.  There are enough good series out there so avoid a chassis change.

I reckon you'd be looking a good year to do it and think of all that mud and drinking you'd miss

No dis-respect to you Colin mate    but Colin is new to series and general mechanics.  Its a fast learning curve but starting with a project like that can be a bit scary.  I built my hybrid from scatch in 9 months BUT I had already built a series truck.

When you come to do one Colin, I should have the hybrid all ready to play properly so I'll try and give you a hand

Ash - I totally agree its a very daunting prospect and a very fast and steep learning curve. I bought my Series in Jan 2004 and ran it and off-roaded it for 12 months. Never done anything like that before, certainly no previous experience (only the odd oil change and brake pads on my old BMW320).
It was either scrap it and buy another or learn the hard way - so I chose the latter after much discussion with 3 Mud-club members (DPG, macca, and Muky-kid). Glad I did, but some days were very frustrating and on many occasions I nearly threw in the towel. I was very lucky aswell to be able to use the workshops at work and all the tools.
At least I now know that Mud-club members will offer assistance either through the forum, on the phone , or in person   :D
