Title: Auto Box
Post by: paul_humphreys on October 19, 2005, 18:26:59
I am going to see a RRC 1990 auto tomorrow. Its taxed and tested. But it will not move in D (drive) unless you start in first, untill moving, then put put into D. I have heard of this before but carnt remember what it is. Is it a case of a new box or just the fillter in the box?

Needs a rebuild.  One of the clutches will be faulty.

You have 2 choices really... get a second hand box (anything from 50 - 150 quid) or get a recon box (around 600 quid)

or... put up with it until it stops altogether ;-)

Thanks, might get it and break it.

Don't scrap it just for the box, good S/H ones can be had for little money, especially at this time of year.
It might also be worth a can of 'magic fix it' first, I've put some in the crapi and it's much better now.

I'm no expert but it sounds like something sticky in the valves, unless of course it's setting off in 2nd rather than 1st, ours changes at about 5mph when not under any load.
