I broke Big Blue yesterday.
I have a hole in the front axle, somethings burst out. Maybe a tooth or something
Does it sound like a diff or a half shaft's gone?
Look here (http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Jake/gallery/SlabCommon/1/3524de3f0e487a18f99d8a61f8c98895.jpg/) to see the hole.
Also, whilst stuck i lost drive to the back wheels.
I dont remember any sound though.
Does this sound like my transfer box?
Or could it be something simpler
Any idea's??

looking at the hole - its gotta be the diff
not sure about the back end though
-
Tried it with diff lock in?
-
I had two pins let o which smashed the carrier and caused a similar hole. Well two of them actuallyl
-
Yes, no drive.

What are the pins?
(i'm no mechanic)

could be the centre diff - try jacking up the back end of the motor and spinnin the wheels to check.

*excuse my ignorance*
What am i looking/listening for?
-
with the back lifted you can spin the one rear wheel and see if the other rotates in the opposite direction - if it does then your rear diff is ok
-
A friend of mine had this happen, turned out he had done BOTH diffs. His back one went first the extra strain made the front go as well.
Replacement back axel and another front diff.
You can weld the hole up when the diff is out.

Have a look here Jake,
http://members.mud-club.com/profiles/Wanderer/gallery/Diff%20damage
The pins are an integral part of the diff assembly. Mine parted company and went in the crown and pinion which then spat them out of the back of the diff. One at a time as I lost drive initially but got it back again. Then it went a second time.
With the hole in our front diff and then losing drive on the rear I'd think something else has let go as well. Centre diff or the rear diff.
Normally you'll get drive again with one diff having failed. Although it's not advisable to do much running in case the broken parts jam the damaged diff up completely.
Removing the prop and half shafts would make it safeish to drive.

A very useful tip - When welding the diff hole up - do it from the inside , not the outside. easier to repair/ clean and see.
and keep the amps down as diff pans are very thin - otherwise you 'll do what a mate done a blew a hole in the pan the size of a 2p piece when welding up a pin hole!

cheers for the tip!!
:D

Also if you can try braising rather than mig/ark
-
from the sound of it the front diff has jumped ship, when you weld it do it on the outside & fit a bit o flat bar bent round to give a bit more protection,
the back could be a shaft which takes all of 10 min to check by pullin the shafts if its not them could be the diff but as it hasnt made itself known it may be something in the Tbox,,
you have tried driving it with the difflock in eh jake??
-
I try'd to drive it just after.
It would'nt move on flat ground with the diff lock on/off or high/low
-
jake, can i give you a shout on ur mobby??
-
Thanks for the call mate.
I'll be checking it all over soon.
Thank g*d for the Sodbury Sortout this Sat!!

No Mike
Kate was driving when it got stuck and had a go at un-sticking it.
Bang!!
I drove for 30 secs before i killed it.
We were only on the site for 20mins before it died.
Oh well , never mind

Re the loss of drive at the back, Jake - have a read of my story http://forums.mud-club.com/viewtopic.php?t=9790&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=half+shaft&start=90
I'm sure it was more than 20 minutes .... about 30 I reckon

and you have one of the messiest jobs agead of you

Not to worry Jake... time for a set of ARBs and some nice halfshafts ;-)

Dont say that Tim, their on my wish list.
Hang on, Is this the Devon 4x4 sales talk coming out?
Come on then, how much?
(1996 300 tdi disco, not my 1991 V8 version)
-
I bet there wont be much (if any) change from £2k
ouch!
-
I suppose i could ask my Mum and Dad to bring me a pair of ARB's over.
Half price in the States
(They live in San Diego, USA)
-
I think £2K is a bit on the high side 8)

For future reference, if the rear diff is bust the handbrake won't work either, as it's mounted on the transfer box.
-
As long as the centre diff isn't in?

here we go
following a little research the costs are :
£1000 ARB diffs x2
£150 ARB compressor
£150 fitting of the diff centres and tapping the air inlet hole
£450 front and rear HD half shafts (£225 per set - ashcrofts)
£1750
and don' t forget the vat
£306.25
totalling £2056.25
add on a few pennies for halfshaft gaskets and stub axle gaskets etc...
the above assumes no discount, or shipping - See weren't too far out
:D
-
Just been out and had a look underneth.
When its in diff lock both prop's spin.
So that means diffs or/and half shafts then?
:?
-
Sounds like it. Have a look on ebay as there was a rolling RRC chassi on there for about £50 with 24 spline axels.
-
I'm going to break it intsead.
:D
See the for sale section

What are you going to do for transport while building "Challenger" then?
-
I'm possibly buying a series 3 on sat.
We'll see.
-
Before you chop it up I have some spare axle parts, front casing, diffs, halfshafts if that's what's gone.

One way or the other, its going soon.
If i wanted to fix it, Sodburys this Saturday, i could obtain the bits there.
Cheers for the offer though
