ok this is what i think has happend
on the frunt diff were the prop gose in ive got a lot of oil and when driving the stering is going all over the place with grinding got it home had a look and the prop is lose i dontknow whats going on all i know is i got to get it sorted can any one tell me what i have wrong and how much it will cost ? for the new parts thanks

sounds like the nut holding the diff flange on has come loose as this happened to me on the way to a safari & the prop came off & dented the starter,sump n exhaust,also mullered 3 of the nuts /bolts & the seal was severly pregnant as it doesnt seal what so ever now,
to fix it you need to remove the front prop 7 have a look to see if the nut is loose,if it is tighten it up & refirt the split pin,if its tight then the bearing has prob gone so that will need to be replaced AFAIK its a tapered bearing so shouldnt be to hard to do,never had to change one yet as i run the diffs till they break & if its wapping about thats just another oil leak to worry about :lol: :lol:

so is it esey to do and why would the stering go all over the place ? and griding

if its grinding i rekon the bearing is gubbed n may require a new diff,if i was closer i could give an acurate diagnosis,
certinally wouldnt recomend driving it till A you get a diagnosis & B get it fixed,
i dunno why your steering would be all over the shop

lookin at either a complete new front diff (s/h or new) or put a bearing init,hard to really say from so far away what you'll need but if getting it done by a garage then ouple of hundred + but if you are doing it yourself i rekon it could be done for under a ton

was thinking of getting the garage to do it as im working all week think £200 willdo it

If the bearing has gone the this would make the front propshaft run out of true and effect the steering, making the steering wheel wobble.
When you say the prop is loose, where is it loose? Is it at the diff flange, U/J, centre spline or transfer box flange?

Might as well stick a good S/H diff in it rather than worry about the amount of damage that's occured.
Our car had a recon diff in the back when we bouoght it, the input bearing went at speed and the pinion bent as did the rear prop.
Stick an alternative diff in and check the prop too.

well its now being looked at right now so hopfall by the weekend the gecko will be back on the road :P bet its going to be £££££££ thow thanks all you lot for the help

just to say it was not the diff at all it was a wheel baring and its being fixed :P i hope i will get it sorted for this weekend

Ah, yes that would have the effect you describe.
Set of bearings, £7 each plus oil seals. Trouble is if the stub axle is b***ered they are £100 plus!
Add labour
Get the other one checked too, just in case.
