Whilst playing about today my gearbox has been giving me probs.
When going up steep hills and not quite getting to the top my box was locking up. It has done it twice today and is not good. When I say locking up I mean its locked in a gear and not going forward or backwards. I was able to get out of it and not apply the hand break at 45 deg. If I try to get it out of gear it wont. If I try to set off it just stalls the engine. The only way to get it going is for someone to pull me forward. Then Everything is fine all gears and works fine. It has happened twice today and it is only doing it on steep hills.
Any help appreciated.
Or a cheep gearbox...

I'd start by checking the oil level in the box.

On my last check about a month ago it was fine but you may be right.

Not good when you get stuck at the top of a large hill and you are not just at the top. Happened twice to me today at briercliffe. You have my simpathy mate....

Checked the oil level and we got milk...
Water has got in so going to drain and fill with fresh. Worked fine this morning but I still dont trust it.

Change it yes, but see if you can get some flushing agent for it as well, and then so a second change

Now I have the gearbox in bits the only thing I can see was the problem is that the tooth off the 3rd gear syncro unit was chipped off. So when I was going up hills it must have shifted about so as to be flipped up ontop of the gears and locking into place. When I rock the landy the gears go into reverse and the piece droppes off to the bottom again.
landroverkeith may be a good Idea to empty your box and then flush the box out with something like diesel. I once did this with my old renault five engine. I emptyed the oil and filled with diesel ran it for 2 mins then emptyed it and left it to drain for a couple of hours. When I filled it back up with oil it ran for about 2 months without the engine oil going black. It was a very clean engine after that. Flush the gearbox and see if you get any bits out.
Good luck...
