Just bought one myself from Paddocks

Total cost was 79.95 for 6 bolt unit, 9.00 delivery, 100.00 surcharge and 10.00 collection charge for old unit.  All plus Vat. :?

How long does it take to fit a new box? Only wondering cos the 90 is going in on Friday to get done, and don,t want to be ripped off!!!!

Dead easy to fit, really no challenge.

Unblot the steering joint inside the engine bay and slide it off the top.

Unbolt the steering drop arm and the bolt that ons the chassis.

Un bolt the 4 (or 6) bolts on the chassis.  Drop it out

Re-fit.

Did mine last weekend, took me less than 30 mins.  All you need is some decent spanners and a socket set and you'll be done.

Well my 90 went in on Friday for the new box fitted, and guess what? yup they tried to rip me off  :x

They tried to charge me 4 hours labour at 32.00 per hour plus Vat to change the box :(  They reckoned they could not get the arm off, and it took 2 errrrr mechanics to remove it. lol

Well you can imagine what I had to say to them when I picked it up :x  :x  :x  :x   Needless to say only a quarter of their bill got paid :?

Wonder if it's cos I am female, they thought they could take the p

i aint gonna defend the garage that did the job but having done the job myself in that position "IF" the arm doesnt come off easily it then becomes a runt of a job to do,also if the pipes dont go in first time it then starts to cause all sorts of problems, also in regards to the taking 2 mechanics, it does take 2 to put it up "IF" you dont want your nice new shiny 1 landing on the floor as it aint a lightweight piece of kit,ive done boxes in a couple of hours or more it depends on what you find when you lift the bonnet & get started in about the job

Thats very true as V8 redline says.

Seems 4 hours is a bit excessive, even when its a tough job it should not take two 4 hours.

Well done for standing your ground though!!!!  Glad to see a girlie being strong, well done you!!  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D  :D

the saga continues

Spoke to my mechanic today. They've taken the old box off and it fell apart when removed.
:?

Apparently the main cog that goes from steering shaft into box fell apart on removal.

Was told that if this had gone while driving it would of been goodnight as would of lost all steering

somebody up there likes me it seems

Ash
they've said "it's the worst condition for a still working steering box they have ever seen"

Think its a credit to solihull there.

I agree!! A credit to the Land Rover designers!  They certainly made them abusable.

Best bit is, even when they are totally wrecked, you can still get them re-con!  :D

WOO HOO   :D
Got the 90 back today with all new steering box fitted.
The garage kept the old one for me so they could show me exactly what the problem was.
You could turn the top lug a full 360 and the bottom lug just did nothing at all.
Just to celebrate have given the 90 a waxoyl as well to get it ready for winter
