Sounds like the pump is knackered. Running when oil and engine cold, thicker oil and pressure.

10 mins later.

Engine warms, thinner oil, and passing the pump. :(

so check the pump, the oil pressure release valve, al that kind of stuff.  When you wizz up the pump on a warm engine, do yo get the pressure back?  if so it could be the oil pump drive itslef is toasted.

Sounds to me like the pump or the pressure relief valve is worn and letting the warm thin oil to 'escape'.

It might also be worth changing the pressure switch as this may be being affected by the thinner oil.

Sounds like the same prob on the lightweight, the oil pressure drops right off on tickover when warm, but reasonably ok on running

15w 40 RRB.....had to get it from Halfrauds on Sunday afternoon and that's what the book said.........is it wrong? (mind you, that's what's in my EFI Rangie too??)

I know it's not the gauge Luffy by the sound it started to make when it was reading nil

Off to check PR Valve and hope !!

Cheers guys

If it was low oil pressure I'd suggest trying 20w/50, the second number is the viscosity hot and that's a noticeable drop, 50 to 40 but a new 15w/40 oil should be up to the job.  LR changed the spec partly because of the availability of 20w/50 and partly because modern manufacturing allowed the use of thinner oils with no detriment.  AnyV8 can run on20w/50 and that's what I recommend when available.

However, I don't think that's going to solve your problems.  Fingers crossed it's the PRV or wear in the oil pump, the condition of the pump cover will give you an idea.  When replacing the pump cover, fill the pump with vaseline to prime the pump.

If it's not a problem there you could have very severe wear on the crank/big ends, only allowing the pressure to drop as the engine turns.  This would explain why you can get the pressure back up with your drill attachment.  That would mean at the least dropping the sump and shells out to check, possibly then a regrind depending on what you find.  For a 3.5 you'd be as well off buying a S/H runner, even if you opt to rebuild that one at a later date.

So let's hope it's the pump then [-o<
