At a guess for one of the aid agencies, could be going to be flown out

They look partially armoured, going by the depth of the screen

Do the red wings signify bomb disposal or is that just old ex-MOD ones?  :D

White in UN, not sure about the wings though.  Army bomb disposal units had red front and rear wings.  Possibly for clearing mines?

True about the wings & bomb disposal, but with you saying ambulances I was presuming they had red crosses on them.

With all the problems with bombs at present, perhaps they are finally upgrading some of their equipment, but the local unit use a :Leyland 7.5tonne truck

Could be to do with the UN, especially out in the former Yugoslavia area, still not a very healthy place for a days green laning

Ok, could't see that on them, sounds like relief agencies then would be the best bet, maybe Africa, more than likely to be moved from place to place

Yes it looks like some aid agency! if you look at the front of the defender you will see it has a CODAN aerial Mast! which is similer to what i used in Bosnia and Rwanda!! When i manage to convert some of my stills to Digital you will see what i mean!!

CODAN aerial Mast

Is that the aerial on the bonnet/bumper?
What does that do?

Whatever it does, its positioning must indicate these are left hand drive, so they are for export, but I think this is probably obvious.

Its a long distance Transciever! We used them in Bosnia to contact Base Approx 400 miles away! and they are Damn Good! Whilst out in Rwanda Africa we drove up the top of a mountain and contacted Base In Zagreb Croatia Quite easily! And you can make Ship to Shore Telephone calls on it! amazing bit of Kit!

So does that indicate these will have a military usage, or is the same radio system used by other large organisations?
