I'd go for a 200 or 300 Tdi from a defender - expect to pay about 1K for the engine.

The Nissan diesel is apparently quite good in a Series.... and there is a conversion kit about to let you put then engine from a black cab in there too.
All my Series conversions have involved V8s... so that's about as much help as I can be :-)

A friend of mine rang me last nigt about a patrol, he was selling it, think it was 400, no t & t though, but a good engine

A disco 200tdi will fit, and if you look around you can get 200tdi disco complete for under a £1000. One recently sold on ebay £750.
You get the engine you want and you could easily break the rest and make some of you money back.

there is prima 2.5 on the famous auction house but are they powerful enough for a 109 or best suited for the 88"

Just put a 300tdi in mine. Got a 82,000 mile Tdi with auto box off ebay for £1000
Its a great conversion and I wouldnt fit anything else now plus only took a weekend.

and seem to drop in price every week
Saw a 300tdi go a few weeks ago for £501
They are certainly getting cheaper. Look for the obscure description like just Discovery engine (that was what mine was under and there were no bids bar mine)

The 300Tdi will fit the series box if you fit the backplate from a 4 cylinder diesel.
I put a 2.5 diesel from a LDV into my Series III 109 High Cap pickup and it transformed it, better starter, more power, more MPG then the 2.25 diesel it replaced.
