Title: Fuel economy
Post by: nzoliver on August 18, 2005, 08:29:56
:D

Whato all! We have discussed this before, but I am getting 26mpg in my EDC AUTO 300Tdi Disco on a run. How's this compare wif anybody elses? Also, has anybody removed their CAT and had an improvement in performance etc?

TA very mush.   8)

I used to get up to 32mpg out of my 200Tdi manual, but with the TD5 manual I gave up measuring it when it was consistently coming in below 25mpg  :x

By the way, travelling in convoy with 200Tdis and 300Tdis, it was clear that although my chipped TD5 could out-pull them up hills, it wasn't by much, and there were certainly times when they would pull away from me through a better choice of gears.

I'd say that in a drag-race between a well-sorted 300Tdi Defender and my chipped TD5 Discovery, there wouldn't actually be that much in it, apart from I'd spew out less smoke.

My point is that I have a more expensive, less economical engine which doesn't have much more performance and is less rugged (eg water ingress) - that's progress I guess.

26 sounds about right for a 300 auto I'd say.

My 200 Manual was always on 27 mpg, seemingly no matter how I drove it.  The 300 should be slightly better, but you loose that advantage with the auto box.

300TDi around 26 is the same as mine, but my mate borrowed it and got 553 miles out of a tank . . . . . . . .

We average 30mpg in our 300 Tdi auto, worst I have seen is 28mpg, best is 32mpg.  Ours is standard apart from a K&N filter.

Have you got a roof rack fitted?  That can affect the fuel consumption.  Also what tyres have you got?  Ours its fitted with Goodyear GT+4's (road biased). Mud terrain or very wide tyres will also hit the fuel consumption.

Funny you should say that.  My 200Tdi seemed pretty unvarying in both performance and economy, no matter whether running with just me in it, or with a fully laden roof rack and 6 passengers.  In contrast, the TD5 economy took a dive when I put the roof rack on, and running heavily laden I can't even bring myself to check the economy.

Managed 29MPG out of my 300tdi non cat with big intercooler on a run.  Usually about 26mpg mixed driving.

Just come back from a trip around the Alps and managed a very reasonable 29 :)  from very mixed driving from trip over the maintains in low box to 60 to 65 miles an hours cruses on the French toll roads in the end we have completed over 2 thousand miles . I have got a 200 TDI with a K&N plus larger intercooler plus adjusted pump but I did have a roof rack on plus a top box. The only problem was the odd black cloud   high in the Alps due to the lack of air but this also happened to one of our party with a TD5 with a chip so it wasn’t a problem. Simdeb was also with us and we did the run together but due to him towing a sankey trailer and 2 extra kids every time we filled up it cost me on average 8 to 10 euro less than him.

Ps I hope you got back ok Gords. :D

All the best Arightpest

I don't know what you boys are doing only getting 2-300mpg from a tankful.  I get over 500miles out of mine.

Mind you, I did take my ITG filter out today and it is well gunked up.  Time to clean it out ready for the run up to Malvern this weekend....

my old 200tdi could regularly get 500-550 miles from a tank without trying. my 300tdi auto has just got around 480 from a tank going round yorkshire but generally it depends on how its driven, i tend to use it in '3' then shift into 'D' around 45mph otherwise it changes up early,SWMBO uses it in 'D' all the time and just puts her foot down and can use a tank in 250miles

500 miles?

I can get about 350 and thought that wasn't bad. Mind it is usually towing a caravan and laning or in a quarry. (not with the caravan still on the back though)

Do 300's have bigger tanks to 200's?

I (usually) fill mine right to the top so I can check the consumption using the 'brim test' and keep getting around 26MPG from my 300TDi Manual, which I thought was not very good as I've seen/heard people talking about 30MPG, but I regularly get into the 600's on a tank full, if I get the fuel light to come on I can probably hit around 650-680 miles and there would be some 'emergency' fuel left which might push it to 700 (but I wouldn't want to try!).

200, 300 and even 500 miles on a tankfull sounds wrong (unless some V8's have slipped in here quietly), but now I can see why there are lots of adverts in the mags for fuel cans!

I'm not sure of the capacity of my tank (it looks standard) but I usually pay about £75 at the minute to fill it up.

Tim.

My overall average in the 12 months since I bought the thing is 25.8, which includes any off-roading I've done (not that much, really).

Makes my last car (4.6 P38 Auto) seem rather thirsty (15.6 over a similar period) ...

I too find that the economy doesn't seem to change, no matter how I drive it!

Just got back from camping trip (with roofbars and box) and managed 465 miles before the fuel warning light came on in my 300tdi auto - approx 31mpg!

A discovery 200tdi tank has a capacity of 88 litres.  returning 500 miles to a tank would work out at around 28.4 miles to the gallon, which if driving mixed motorway/town would be about right me thinks  :?:

On a run my 200tdi gets about 30-32 mpg

I clocked my TD5 without the roof rack on, earlier in the week, at 26mph - not great but it does have bigger tyres and a chip.  I was going to clock it on a pure motorway run, but the bloody Esso pump would only give me 65l as they apparently don't trust their customers to pay for any more!

Worked it out accurately, comes to 28.5 mpg

Full tank was 74 litres = 16.3 gallons

mpg = 465 miles / 16.3 gallons = 28.5mpg

still not bad with the roofbox on.  :D

10p/mile, that's all I care about.  The Micra costs nearly that now and it does 50mpg on Diesel.
