how about the relay were ever it is
-
take the switch out, if it's not fitted it doesn't have to work!
-
gnasher is there a separate relay for controlling the hazards or is it the same as the one for the indicators?
mobi-does that apply for things like hazards in the MOT?
-
my switch broke in my defender borrow one from someone local and try that worth a try just for the mot

i dont see whey not series land rovers don't have them! if it's fitted it must work. same as the rear wiper if the motor is kaput just take the wiper arm off!, i can't see why you can't do the same for the hazards, if the switch is not there they can't test it, its not a legal requirement to have it fitted.
-
Vehicles registered after 1st April 1986 have to be fitted with hazards. As such, removing the switch will fail the MOT if it is after this date.
Prior to this, you are quite right. If it's fitted it has to work. remove it and it can't be tested.
-
hmmm thats annoying,so basically it will fail the MOT as it is.anyone got any suggestions as to what I could look for?
-
try another hazard switch, they always go wrong, there just rubbish
however, are the indicators working, as usual when the hazard switch goes, it plays havock with the rest of the lights and a few other leccy bits as they all run through the hazard switch
best bet is to try another switch
oh, if the indicators do work but the hazard dont, that rules out the relay
without going down to one of the 90's to check ( as i cant remember )
afink the hazards run off a different fuse to the indicators

The most likely thing is the switch itself. The contacts inside corrode and burn. We find that the only answer tends to be replacement. You might be able to take it apart and clean it up for a temp fix, but they tend not to last long like this.
Paddocks have them quite cheap IIRC.

yep id say the little contacts have burnt, altho, when the do, they wipe the plastic rocker out with them aswel
ive only ever been able to fix one before

indicators work ok untill i turn the hazards switch on, then nothing happens (no indicators or hazards!). i assume this is because when the hazards are on they override the indicators.I will have a look inside the switch.annoying i only noticed it now i dont usually use hazards!

its deffo the switch then 8)

Yes. The hazard switch isolates the indicator circuit before starting the hazards.

well took a gamble and bought a new switch.the only place that could get me one on the day was the main stealer who charged me £50!!It was the switch and the hazards are now working.
BUT the tester did not even try them!!!
back in for a partial retest tomoro after i have replaced the track rod (bent) and ball joint on steering which is moving up a little when steering moved side to side.
Many thanks for all your help guys
