The previous owner showed me how to start it, but i cant seem to do it, am a bit dense when it comes to engines. Is there anyone in the South Cumbria area that may be able to help??
Cheers

I take it its not as easy as turning a key ?
-
Nope, if only it was! I need to rewire the starting setup eventually, but i need some help cos i have no clue!
-
What vehicle, and what engine for a start. (No pun intended) :)
-
Series 2a 1963 swb with a 2.25 diesel.
-
should just be turn the ignition on and press the button?? Does it turn over?
-
the ignition switch is not connected properly yet, and i dont know where the push button is, i cant find one! Hence am hoping someone local can lend a hand! lol
-
button on mine is central lower dash, just above trans cover - sort of in line with 3rd gear. so can you turn ignition on at all?
-
Ignition turns on yes, and it turns over if you use a screwdriver on the startermotor! But there is no button i can see!
-
You could always use the starting handle - good for building up the muscles. Big silver thing in mine (button that is)- none of your modern flimsy c@@p. can you not remember any of what prev owner said?
-
Do you pre-heat before attempting to start :?:
-
depends how original it is, the ignition key might only work glow plugs and you might have a start stop cable (looks like a choke cable and leads to the diesel pump) this will need pulling to start push to stop.
for the starter button
if altanator (like std car) === follow cable from positive on batt and should lead to a switch on bulkhead this is starter switch (push button from other side)
if dynamo (just looks like a steel round tube) follow negative wire to switch
remeber if dynamo, will be postive earth !!!! so every thing is back to front ..... so be very carefull with electrics as body is live source not the battery
-
Is there a button on the floor, the older versions have a foot button down there with a direct link to the starter

Earlier Series motors also had the dim / dipped switch on the floor too, might not help you start the engine, but it's fun to play with.

Ok, thanks to those who tried to lend a hand with trying to tell me how to do it, but the thing is, the previous owner has tried to explain it to me over the phone in idiot terms and i still cant do it, now he cant travel 330 miles just to help, what i need is someone relatively local to actually come down and show me, cos i dont know engines.
Cheers

Calm down calm down...
Have you used the pre heater? In cold weather expect on a series diesel to have to heat glow plugs for around 30 seconds so the orange light goes out BEFORE trying to start it.
Thats your first hurdle.
Also check the stop lever is pushed back into place (assuming it has a stop lever!)

i was using the pre heater, but i know nothing else, the pre heater isnt connected its loose but i put it on a live connection first.
-
can someone not go and help this poor soul
-
Have you sorted it yet? Im in merseyside so its a bit far to travel but if your still stuck after crimbo (heaven forbid!) I will come and have a look. Sureley someone more local can help you?
Im no expert (mines a petrol) but 2 heads are better than one I suppose! Good luck!
-
If you have tried a live connection to the glow plugs, perhaps all of them are not working
How did you get the feed to the glow plugs?
-
Im starting to feel like xuxy ;)
Even pulled up multimap to get an idea of the distance.
Maybe you can arrange a little winter BBQ for us ? :D
-
With regards to Damo's comment there will be a few pm's heading a few ways!
-
Back again to scrounge my invite to winter bbq! Maybe a ""get the landy going party" followed by a quick tour of some local lanes? :D
-
Sounds like the best plan to me! 8)
-
Indeed, it looks like it could be planned, and if its sorted before then then its a weekend of laning and beer!! lol

Auto Electrician or just an Electrician? As I know an Electrician who goes by the name of Simon, and lives in Cumbria.
-

Not quite true. A Dynamo can work either positive or negative earth. All it takes to switch the eartha round, is to connect the battery the opposite way, and give it a few seconds being ran and the earthing will now have switched.
Problem is, you risk blowing parts of the electrics doing this on such old vehicles, as the voltage box has a number of switches in it which switch depending on the earthing.
-
This thing has an alternator! Thankfully, and yes his name is Simon, Maltelec off the series 2 club forum, but i do believe he is an auto electrician as opposed to a normal one.

Yeah, thought it was going to be him. There arn't that many people in Cumbria with a poo-brown Series Land Rover that I know of. :P
-
Especially as he actually has 2 poo brown ones!! poo1 and poo2, currently poo2 is on ebay!
-
Yes, I know. He also has a Series 3 109-inch which is an ex-police vehicle...
-
With a pickaxe sized hole in the chassis! LOL
