Title: Disco wont start-help!
Post by: 2 the max on November 28, 2009, 16:23:24
When i go to start the engine, i get nothing except a fairly high pitched whirring sound.
Was doing this last week too but on 2nd try it would start straight away, now nothing. Anyone know what this could be and how much to get it fixed as it is currently stuck in swainsthorpe 25 miles away from home :@

Sounds like your solenoid isn't engaging the starter?

Try thumping the starter with a lump of wood then try it as its probably just a bit sticky!!

You will probably need to replace the starter soon.

If you are getting a noise which sounds like something is spinning, it sounds like the cog from the starter is not firing out to engage with the flywheel and is instead spinning in the nose of the starter.

Certainly sounds like you need a new starter motor.

Ok cheers people, anyone know how much one of these will be to buy and fit (roughly)? I am a 4x4 newbie, rubbish at mechanics too so will be getting a garage to fit.

also forgot to mention, this has only been happening since i went through some floods last week- could the water have got into the starter motor and short circuited something?

Ah!! It is possible that some crap has got into the solenoid? It is probably best to just replace as you are a novice with these but most would remove the starter and give it a good clean out.

I've never done one on a Discovery, but the old series ones were 3 bolts to undo, disconnect the electrics (remember where they go!!) remove starter, refit new one do up bolts and re connect electrics! Its no hard, awkward probably due to the tight spaces but not hard.

About £80 +vat for a new one

Depends on what brand, but I know I'd rather pay £80 than £140
