Title: The rebirth of my off road Discovery
Post by: Jake on May 21, 2008, 20:50:42
Before any of you long term members say it, i know
I've brought and fitted a few bits now
Its a slow proccess due to lack of funds so i've been hunting bargins
I've fitted a fuse box in the boot which runs sockets, amp and a few other bits
(http://inlinethumb52.webshots.com/26099/2765744160102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
I've also removed the rear seats and put pockets in their place, plus I fitted a dog guard
(http://inlinethumb55.webshots.com/28918/2240753370102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
I have also fitted some diff guards (front and back)
Then, off with the A bar and front bumper and on with my new D44 winch bumper and sticky number plate
(http://inlinethumb59.webshots.com/27258/2038537530102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
Today i have fitted my D44 fairlead....
and a Warn 9.5 Ti winch (which i won on ebay for £202!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Grill cut and back together
(http://inlinethumb13.webshots.com/2060/2552097300102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
I'll be wiring it up and fitting 100ft of 9.5mm Plasma rope before Eastnor

She's looking fantastic mate.

I myself am in the process of saving the pennies to fit a winch but it seems to be taking ages..... :'( :'(

The fuse box controls my amp, 2nd battery powered white caravan electrics (doesn't run down my starter battery if i have my fridge and lights on all night) which has a key operated isolator switch, a Mud UK accessory socket next to the isolator and there's also a 4 gang accessory socket block (which you can just see above the pocket on the right)

oh boy jake a beast in the making did u hear about that disco on 55s

That disco is owned by one of the Disco breakers and was at the Sodbury/Beaulieu autojumble It made me laugh as May's LRO magazine touted a Green Disco 2 TD5 Auto as the tallest Disco on Portal axles and 40" wheels.  But I saw the 55" wheeled colossus and thought 'Sod' driving that round Chelsea.

Where are you lot getting hold of these larger size BFG's then... DO they do 33x10.50?

I'm tempted by 33's but I reckon my poor old 200TDI would not cope with them. It already struggles to get to 70mph and as it is!

is this the Disco on 55's you guys were talking about, as you say this one belongs to Disco Breakers, this pic was taken at Manby a couple of weeks ago, Quietsleeper (standing behind it) is 5' 9" tall so that puts the door handles at around 6' from the floor

After some set backs (gear box went pop) i'm back on track
Today I brought and fitted some Old Man Emu suspension
Here's my shopping
(http://inlinethumb42.webshots.com/10025/2187216040102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
I fitted all the springs, shocks, rear relocation cones, front heavy duty turret rings and heavy duty spring retainers in 3.5 hours   :D
(dont you just love workshops with wind spanners and ramps   :P)

One of the things we do when fitting suspension at D44 is remove the rear bush cups from the axle's
This allows more freedom and a touch more droop travel
Before
(http://inlinethumb36.webshots.com/20579/2109545520102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
After
(http://inlinethumb40.webshots.com/29735/2575811540102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)

I took some pictures before and after fitting the suspension too
before
(http://inlinethumb35.webshots.com/27874/2230699320102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
After
(http://inlinethumb28.webshots.com/20187/2359401860102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)

Before
(http://inlinethumb14.webshots.com/29901/2905722210102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
After
(http://inlinethumb48.webshots.com/6895/2469969110102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
Looks pretty daft on the pram wheels now though

Today I fitted my D44 steering guard
The fitting procedure is simple.
Fit the bash plate to the bottom of the bumper using 2 of the winch fixings and the two pre drilled holes in the winch tray of my D44 bumper.
Then attach the fixing bracket to the steering guard to give you the chassis drilling points
Then drill up through the chassis and loosely attach the the bracket as shown
(http://inlinethumb29.webshots.com/41564/2980513190102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)

Now for the bash plate
(http://inlinethumb15.webshots.com/2190/2381609160102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)

The finished guard

Looks great and i'm well pleased

looking back at the suspension in the previous pics the front turret looks like its at a funny angle, or is the way that im looking at it?

It does look wonky doesn't it
The other side spring was out at that point and the pictured side was not done up tight so that might be why
Well spotted  ;)
And as for bushes...ring me and i'll send you some more if you like  :D

Today i test fitted some 35/11.5 Simex to see whether or not i'm gonna regret spending big bucks on 35" BFG's
It looked mega cool when i took it off the ramp
(http://inlinethumb53.webshots.com/39540/2071252430102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
But the arches were a bit too close for comfort
(http://inlinethumb63.webshots.com/15870/2827349080102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)

Looks [!Expletive Deleted!] awesome though
It seemed pointless but i had to try it on the bank
(http://inlinethumb22.webshots.com/43221/2453366640102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
But they rubbed on the front
(http://inlinethumb46.webshots.com/42541/2747451760102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
and nearly killed the back doors
(http://inlinethumb33.webshots.com/19168/2327642220102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
All in all, 35's wont be going on then
33's will fit so i guess i could save some money here and go for a set of KL71's
Jobs a good'en

I agree that it's better to stick with 33s. Less pressure on drive train/box, etc.

I'm sure others will disagree.

If more clearance was made to the arches where they currently touch would those tyres then fit OK or do the look like they would touch else where as well before you reach the limits of suspension travel?

My arch and suspension modifications are different to yours, but with 34" swampers I had more problem with of a problem rubbing on the inner rear wheel arches, rather than the outer arches.

the disco looks so good with those 35s on - surely with the know how at your gaff there will be a way to 'engineer' them on?!  ;)
Title: Re: The rebirth of my off road Discovery
Post by: Gav_T on August 12, 2008, 17:36:19
If you are going for the kl71's then i would still get the 35's. From what i have read they are undersized a bit and they wont have the tread depth of the simex's either so this will help more.

Failing that just put a inch's worth of body lift on? You have seemed like you have been aiming to get 35's on for a while now so dont give up just yet!

Gavin.

I've been thinking about a body lift but i dont want to have to redesign the front bumper/steering guard (because they'd look rubbish with a gap)
There is options to redesign the arches, which might include dumping them for the proper Aussie versions and maybe even lift it another 1" using spacers...
Watch this space

Jake

I hear what you are saying about the bodylift and agree that the gap between the bumper and the lights can look naff, but if you get a piece of steel in the matching finish to the bumper and simply stamp D44 into it , it will be just fine and accepted as cool.   ;)

jake, all you need to do is chop the back end off of it and it will be twinned with mine!

It does look good with 35's on, never the less i'd go with 33's and my choice would be kl71's.

I'll shortly be doing exactly that. I dont want to change my gearing for road use, uprate all my axle components etc just yet and I think that 35's are just too big, to heavy too everthing for a standard drivetrain.

Good luck with whatever you decided fella, love that steering guard too :)

Stu.

After some deliberation and much thought i settled on a choice for the tyres.
I love Simex and always have and was gutted not to be fitting 35" Extreme Trekkers.
So i thought, instead of cutting more and bodylifting lets have a comprimise.
Jungle Trekkers  :D  :D
33/11.5/16's fitted to silver 8x16 modulars

I've mounted the spare on a D44 raised spare wheel carrier
(http://inlinethumb12.webshots.com/13643/2460483940102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
I took my alloys home from work today too
I tried to get them into the car but failed so i hooked up one of the trailors and put them in there.
Due to the new height of the car the trailor only ran on its rear wheels

The discovery looks good on the JTs, even if the tow ball looks to be far too high for that trailer.
Why didn't you go for a set of 34s though or would they have been too big and rubbed like the 35s?

Looks ace, i fancy a set of those jungle trekkers on mine not much more exspensive than Bfg's. :D

Whats the wear rate like  on tarmac? :-k

Title: Re: The rebirth of my off road Discovery
Post by: Jake on September 07, 2008, 10:46:09
I went for 33's due to the cheap plastic arches not having cut enough out of my bodywork and 34's would have rubbed too.
As for wear rate, they are a Extreme mud tyre and therfore you shouldn't worry too much about their road wear.
That said, unlike the Extreme Trekker, these are speed rated for road use (100mph) which is nice  ;)
They are very noisey though  I suppose i'll have to turn the stereo up some more then
Actually, sod the noise, check out how much grip i've got!!!!!

Cheers peeps
Whats next on the list do D44 do a side exit exhaust for 300tdi.
Unfortunetly not
I'll have to get one made for the car.
The next things to be done is the tank guard, heavy duty steering arms with damper relocation and a complete Polybush.
The list of upcoming goodies is long
Air locker, HD shafts/CV's & flanges, HD rear bumper, tree sliders, roof lighting, intercooler just to name a few bits
By this time next year it will be finished (i hope)

I won this (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220255170471) recently and want to fit a steering guard the same as yours. I've browsed and searched a certain Devonian web site and can't find it. Any chance you can post a link?

the grip from simexs is great isnt it - in the mud they are fantastic.

Have you had any thoughts on the suspension Jake? With the arch kit fitted same as yours I'm thinking maybe of sticking with 235/85 or poss 265/75 and swapping the +2" to a heavy duty spring with a 1" lift to take some of the stress off the props and castor.

What width modulars have you got - they look like they fill the arches a bit better than the standard alloys I'm running or have you got spacers under there as well?

Gonna be a bright bonnet with those lights up there!   Is there any mounting point for a CB aerial up there anywhere?

I think you're like me - takes a few different set-ups to get it to the point you're happy with it

Definetly Chris, I'm never happy with the car
The light bar has a cb mount in the middle rear or i can use the roof rack for that.
The wheels are 8x16 tuf tourqe modulars with a +8 off set.  Running with the 2" lift i have 265/75/16's fitted and there's loads of room in the arches.  I'd say you'd be fine on a 1" lift and running the same (235/85/16 are the same height but 30mm narrower)

I've used a 6 gang mount and have (right to left) a winch in/out switch, blank, on/off/on switch to control the top 4 spots and 3 on/off switches which will control the left/right/rear work lights
(http://inlinethumb63.webshots.com/43198/2549199860102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)

Cheers guys  :D
why no D44 curvy light bar? what tent have you got coming?
I decieded not to go for a D44 light bar mainly because they come around and up the roof which interferes with the roof rack legs.
On the blue D2 we prepared the middle legs went behind the light bar and the front ones joined onto it. This made it a permenant fixture.  I can  now remove the roof rack when ever i like and not worry about what it will leave behind.
I am going to buy a ARB Simpson 3 roof tent

Then i fitted the gauges in and set about wiring them in
All fitted and working
(http://inlinethumb57.webshots.com/43448/2966392710102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
Theres a volt meter for my second battery

And a oil temperature gauge
(http://inlinethumb51.webshots.com/45042/2911760810102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
They look sweet!

This week i have been mostly.....

preping for the MOT

First job was to remove the winch
(http://inlinethumb17.webshots.com/42192/2497106380102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
Then off to work and continued stripping the front on the ramp
(http://inlinethumb61.webshots.com/43516/2077741260102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
Removed all the battery/alarm and fuse box
(http://inlinethumb46.webshots.com/45933/2456271590102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
There's a fair amount of rot under the battery tray, front light housing and arch
(http://inlinethumb05.webshots.com/42628/2842584190102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
The drivers side sill was a bit ropy too
(http://inlinethumb41.webshots.com/41128/2386653150102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
That was soon cut out
(http://inlinethumb60.webshots.com/44155/2428412610102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
Whilst the car was being welded by Nick i set about some other jobs on the car. First one was to strip, rub down and paint the winch
(http://inlinethumb23.webshots.com/45462/2629868060102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
Sill repaired
(http://inlinethumb12.webshots.com/45387/2341851880102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
Nick started cutting out the front end next
(http://inlinethumb13.webshots.com/36748/2957065270102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
While i set about fitting a contactor to control the winch
(http://inlinethumb12.webshots.com/43403/2409218920102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
I started sorting out loads of wiring too
This mess
(http://inlinethumb37.webshots.com/45412/2520603830102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
to this
(http://inlinethumb44.webshots.com/44203/2680260130102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
I painted the winch motor and drum with matt black
(http://inlinethumb42.webshots.com/44521/2619195110102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
Then i primed the rest of the winch
(http://inlinethumb36.webshots.com/34851/2633113870102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
I then painted the parts in Rover gunmetal silver (which is identical to the XD9000 colour)
The finished winch
(http://inlinethumb43.webshots.com/6634/2125417420102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
I have a new Warn sticker for the middle which i'll put on in a couple of days
Meanwhile, Nick was hard at work at the front of the car
(http://inlinethumb01.webshots.com/42112/2097119950102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)

I tidied up the wiring under the car.  I put protective trunking on all the cables and p clipped them to the car
(http://inlinethumb44.webshots.com/44075/2465306250102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)

I made all the wiring on the front look nice too
(http://inlinethumb07.webshots.com/45894/2606725510102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
New battery tray in (ASR1400)
Underneth looking great
(http://inlinethumb57.webshots.com/26232/2073900570102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
Pretty neat 'eh
(http://inlinethumb25.webshots.com/43160/2360491290102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)
Then i covered it in anti stone chip under seal
(http://inlinethumb33.webshots.com/6944/2962409710102123940S500x500Q85.jpg)

All back together and parked in the rain

Jake,

That dash pod and Carling switches look great, might have to get one of those in mine, all my Carling switches are mounted in a plastic box on top of the dash but yours looks much better.

Can you get those pods with just the switch mounts? I've got no dials to put in on mine.

They come as a blank canvas with no holes in them

Big enough for 11 switches or 5 guages but you can also use them for accessory sockets and webasto control units
