Title: Another non starter
Post by: Spacemud on September 28, 2007, 18:40:31
Battery on mates V8 Disco went flat which was not too surprising as it hadn't been used for a couple of weeks. Went around in my Series to help start it, but although it tried a tiny bit harder (constant click) it still wouldn't go. Should a decent Series battery be able to start a V8 Disco or is the problm elsewhere? The starter motor is only a few months old.

Thanks

Did you put your battery in his, or jump start it with leads?  I'd expect it should be fine with decent heavy-duty jump leads and a running engine.  :?

Sounds like it could be an earth lead problem on the Discovery. Try putting the earth jump lead direct to the engine not the battery.

A really knackered battery can be like a dead short for a while, possibly also the jump leads aren't connecting too well.
Put the black lead direct to the engine block on the Disco, give it a couple of minutes with the Series at fast idle, then see if there's anything.

Use decent quality jumps too :) The cheap ones with 'half jaws' will do this on a really dead one. I've actually melted them doing this, get a good old metal pair, let the car doign the starting run for a few mins THEN try.

Thanks, tried everything but no luck. After recharging the battery again and using the suggestions above we could get the engine to turn over slowly, but not enough to start her. Reckon he needs a new battery myself!

There goes another £80 or so!
