I have just been given a challenge for this year. I have to take the roof off and drive in water over my sholders. I have a inlet breather (SNOKEL) and rased breathers for the axels but what about the oil filler cap will it let water in ? Also its a perkins 4203. NOT A LANDY.....
what do I need to be thinking about. Take manual fan off disconnect battery....ect ect....
Come on guys dont want to brake it.......
What do I need to check ?
-
wow, now theres a question.
in my humble opinion,
make sure your raised intake is absoluley water tight, use silicon sealer ect.
wouldnt hurt to tape a bag round the oil cap.
idealy use a sealed battery,
vasoline all electrics, terminals, and mechanical linkages,
take out seats, they will hold water like a sponge (literally).
make sure water cant get into the diesel anywhere, and drain tank after your done.
and change all oils after your done.
but, i woundnt do that with mine, i think your asking for trouble :?
-
I'll pull Ya out when ya scew it up Matey
I am 90% sure i would drown before my Truck did, interesting test :)
-
Must get some pics when you go for it...........Good Luck..........let me know when and where and ill be there.........not far from you.
-
What do I need to check ?
check you've got spare underpants for after   You must be mad
-
What do I need to check ?
You need to 'check' into a hospital with very nice doctors who will make you feel better.
Very good luck with this years challenge....BTW what was last years challenge
-
Yep there ya go.....good point mark.....fuel filler cap.....humm thats got to be sorted..... I know.....Behind the seat in a series is the flexi pipe to the tank drain pipe snorkel for that then....
Any more ideas guys.
-
Why would you do this ! Is it a scrap vehicle anyway and you are just seeing what is possible . I know you can totaly submerge a landrover but even with all the preperation is does a great deal of damage to a lot of components . Unless you plan a total stripdown afterwards how are you going to get the water out of all the lights and the instument panel and many other places the water will sit for weeks .
There was an article about the marines and there landrovers in ( i think ) LRO a couple of years back . That told you all the things you needed to do . Good luck with the water .
-
Like you said to prove a point and for the fun. Yes its going to be stripped down and saved for a rebuild at some stage. It will probably be the last run of the old 1975 series and then its going to be pulled apart and made into a BEAST. We are going to get it on Video camera for MC to see.
If you come across the artical please let me know the date....cheers
-
My tip....LIE DOWN, lowers your shoulders
-
How do you know the water is shoulder height, are you going to walk the route first!! Or maybe Jim-Willy's should walk the route to his shoulder height!!
Will you need a breather pipe!!
Somebody said earlier that seats should be taken out - I can aquire a couple of milk crates if needed.
Nigel
-
Na seats will stay in.... Its going to be done in summer when its hot and swetty. Just got tgo find some safe water where its deep enough....
What I mean about safe water is no boulders or bikes in the bottom. It will have to be here in north yorkshire so it owt does go wrong it can be towed home....
-
 water upto my ankles in the disco was bad enuf to sort let alone that deep
-
Oh I already had water upto the seats in mine....and it was a cold day....cold feet for the rest off the day.....not nice....But I want to go all the way.....totaly submerge the vehicle....
-
you are barmy, with a capital... 'nurse, my medication please'.
-
lol well good luck with it ;) learnt my lesson the hardway hehe lol swmbo fixes me with the death stare now if i even look at a puddle lmao  wait till billing course lol
-
Yes I have lost the plot and the question is....." DO YOU WANT TO SEE IT "
-
There is a slot on the Mud-Club video site waiting :D
-
hi chris
your mad
got to see it
i think you will need to raise you exhaust pipe aswell just in case
can't wait
-
Thats right I am mad....And also crazy....its just got to be done. Do you know anywhere over your way where there is water deep enough to do it. But not to deep to go over the snorkel..
-
canal maybe?
-
I was waiting for someone to say that....I be forever pulling shopping trollys and bikes out of the tyres....he he.. Also the cannal is very muddy at the bottom I am sure to get stuck....
-
up over your shoulders? so about tyre height to everyone else?
H
-
change your oil seals and turn them round
so the engine dont suck water in through the seals
cos my sump filled its self through the crank seals
cos as the water cools the sump it creates a vacume
and take the fan off and hope the alt/electrics dont short
-
There was a pic a while back in one of the L/R comics of Ed cobley in a 90 with water up to his neck.
-

Never had a problem like that before. I have had it halfway up the lights before. I think you may have had water coming in somwhere else. Also note its a perkins 4203 not a landrover engine. 3.3L unless that is your engine. Cheers for the info guys keep it coming.....
-
Well worth a day out, or weekend away, to come and watch. Let us all know when and where you plan to do it.
-
I will not a problem. I will post a new topic so all can see when and where. Still looking for water the right deepness around here then if it ll goes wrong I can get it home. Dont want to be dragging it hundreds of miles home....
-
Yes I have lost the plot and the question is....." DO YOU WANT TO SEE IT "
NO
I WANT TO BE THERE NEXT TO YOU .I PROMISE TO CONTINUE WITH MY MEDICATION
-
If you are up here when I do it mate you can ride shotgun......
I can see this ending up in a Landy mag so bring ya best smile..... :D
-
just tell me where and when,i'll be there with peple to watch
-
Anybody who volunteers to ride shotgun wi MiniMan is either mentally ill or hasn't met him yet!!!!!!!!!!!!
He loves that old shed, i don't see it happening. AFAIK there is no water of sufficient depth that we can drive in near him.
Hope He does tho :D
-
Not a problem mate...I will put a post up on Mud Club when and where so all can see.
-
So how far do I have to travel to get this done.....
OK the water needs to be 55" deep or 1400mm or 1.40m so where and I am not traveling over 100 miles from skipton to do it....so where can I do this.... Its to far for Jim Willy to tow me back if it goes wrong.....he he

NewMillarDam ford maybe at the right time of year. Then we can tow to mine if it dies. Maybe that aint deep enough tho, not sure.
-

-
S C RUFFY ?????? whats that then......he he
-

i hope it now makes sence
-
Oh right.....silly me.....LMAO
-
I work in mental health, think I'll come along hehe
-
That would be great then you can section The Fat Controller after I have finnished with him.....lol
-
i will let you know i once had a certificate stateing i was sane,i can't remember the doctors name.
-
Now this I have to see! The only place I can think of that may be suitable is the Marine Lake in southport but its a fair treck from north yorks. I will be there where ever! :D
I can supply a few life jackets for the outing if it helps ;)
-
Southport......? How many miles is that.......?
-
About 54 acording to the rac man :) http://rp.rac.co.uk/rp/routeplanner?advanced=false&fromcity=skipton&tocity=southport&rpgo.x=24&rpgo.y=10
You would have to check the lake depth but its gotta be damn close if not perfect. Its man made so should be the same depth all the way. Perfect sliproad to drive down just behind the smallest pub in england on the promenade.
Bloke you need to speak to is called colin poole at southport watersports centre, hes the lease holder type bloke.
Only problem is - its salt water :(
Might also be worth contacting the people at the leisure lakes near southport, they just opened a pay and play site but i remember walking straight accross one of the sailing lakes with water at chest height when I ws about 12 :D
-
Now that is a big possibility.....so what if its salt water....I can take it elswhere to wash it off.....hummmm anyway you can find out for me the depth without to much hastle.....
-
I will see what I can find out :D If your serious that is......
-
Well 50 miles is not to far at all. most would be motorway if I need to be dragged back.....yeh it will be summer aswell as I be dam if I am doing it now.....to cold....

Southport Watersports, The Boathouse, Promenade, Southport, Merseyside
Tel 01704 539701
Good luck! :)
-
Such a shame your so far away!!
The little britain ford i like to play in has a nice deep section.
(Up river for those that know it)
I have video evidence that it can swallow a whole series, even in summer!!
Make sure there is plenty of camera's around when you pop into the water.
I (for one) cant wait to see this
Good Luck!!
:D
-
when do we sink or swim :?: have you found the most suitable pond yet
-
Looks like The Boathouse, Merseyside is a NO GO. They say there will be enviromental issues. So still looking. Its probably a good thing as saltwater and aluminium is a bad mix. Cheers for the info tho. So still looking.
-
Have you tried looking for old gravil pits, when abandoned they flood though not to be too deep varying from waist depth to around 2m with smooth flat bottoms. (also they aren't salt water)
If your lucky you might find one that is suitable, though I wouldn't be suprised if enviromental issues are a problem
Aside from permission, the only problem I can think of is location, gravel pits only appear where there is sufficient gravel to justify quarrying it.
-
Call me stupid but what is a gravel pit ?
-
Gravel pits are (or was most pits are know dissused and flooded) where gravel has be open cast quarred. Holes dug in the ground where the gravel is removed. Posh drive ways have to come from somewhere.
Once most of the gravel is removed it is no longer financialy viable to remove any more so the pit is just left, whalst they go and dig else where.
Most of the bigger ones are used for water sports like the one in the link below.

Anybody who volunteers to ride shotgun wi MiniMan is either mentally ill or hasn't met him yet!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now correct me if im wrong, but havent you ridden shotgun with miniman, of your own free will too and you already knew what he was like.
Hmmmmmm explains alot :(stoopid):
-
Oh right. Nothing like that round here. Its going to be more hard work finding somwhere up here than I first thought...
-
Could you not make yout own....kind of find a field borrow a digger...make water hole....drive through said hole.....fill hole in after......give digger back
Or perhaps we could do a covert operation and dig-raid a field :(biggrin):
-
Well the only other place I can think that could be worth a try is www.southport4x4offroad.co.uk at the leisure lakes between southport and preston? Again im not 100% sure on depth and things.
Cheers,
Mike

Oh yeh I am full of tricks like that.... Dont ya think it might cost me enough if I get it wrong.....let alone a digger and water......HELLO.....
Come on johnty
-
Kev borrows a huge digger when it snows and he is very close to you...........................
-
so all we need to do is apply to the councile to change the lay of the land then ask a farmer......yeh right....NOT A CHANCE......
-
Jake, Little Britain would be cool :)
Salt water will destroy it in months, seem someone dunk a Pajero up to its doorhandles and about 6 months later bits started to fall off despite washing it off. Theres a disco in our local scrappy thats had the same treatment and hasa corrosiion tide mark up to a foot up the doors, below that theres little metal left.
Surely though, if you had a feild you could temporarilly put a hole in it?
-
would they allow the pond at billing to be used for this event,or maybe the jet-ski pond as that one already has fuel deposits in it
-
No good billing is already sorted out. I will not be going in the series....to far for the old beast... Its got to be up here somewhere....
If you think about it would you drive over 100 miles to drive into water up to your neck and then drive home.....NOOOOOO
-
THINK :!: :!: you never asked me to do that
anyway when i come to wherever i will be driving over 100 miles just to get wet and then driving home again.it's what happens when you enjoy making an idiot of yourself
-
This one was done in the lake district. Lots of lakes around there dont know if they would let you do it or try derbyshire lots of little old quarrys in the dales
-
Ive had my old diesel series 3 up to the windscreen, only had a bit of pipe on as a snorkel! That was in a ford in litte baddow, essex!
Greased everything up, drove it through the ford in flood, drove it out, never a problem!
-
what about that lake on TOP GEAR,they don't mind oil in the water
-
They dont seem to mind at all, did look a little deep though!
-
So still everyone is saying this was done here and this was done there butr come on.....I am not driving 100 miles to drown my motor to be towed 100 miles back. At this rate it looks like there are no deep water sections in my area and I am not going to be able to do it.....YORKSHIRE.....NOT lakes or derbyshire YORKSHIRE......I am a sheep s**gger as they all keep saying.....
-
How about catterik army camp got a nice lake on the training ground and army trucks use it to practise fording there should be some nice deep parts in it for you and if its for charity the mod will probley let you do it (good press etc). And its not that far above you
-
I reckon charity is the way forward! Much easier to get permision. I will start - I sponsor a fiver to the charity of your choice! :D
-
Humm now there is a idea. A mate of mine works for the press from catteric he a army photographer. I will have a word with him and see what he says....
-
Never been myself, but from other club members piccys (PLCUK.co.uk) there appears to be deep ditches of water down on Salisbury Plain!
