Title: Myth Busters
Post by: Bush Tucker Man on November 18, 2003, 23:24:55
Has any one watched the above programme on SKY (Discovery 551) this evening.
The 2 guys who were featured (SFX men) were attempting to recreate one of the American 'urban legends'
I'm sure some of you must have heard the one about the rocket propelled Chevvy Impala found impacted into a cliff-face in Arizona.

The 'story' is that a (presumably a) Serviceman had attached a JATO?RATO* device to his car, fired it up & gone  'hell for leather'
That is until he tried to slow down, or turn a corner........

*Jet (Rocket) Assisted Take Off. A solid fuel booster (15 -20 second duration) used to assist aircraft on short runways.

The car clipped a kerb & developed flight charactoristics, ending when the unwilling pilot & his craft made an unwanted contact with a rock-face.

The programme deals with the guys attempting to recreate the event.
They used commercially available rocket engines (4seconds) that amateur rocketeers use.

These develop 1500Ib of thrust (1Ib = 2BHP), they mounted 3 to the car!

I won't reveal the outcome for now, if you're interested & have SKY, it's been repeated at 03:00 Thursday morning (3 & a half hours from now)

www.darwinawards.com

Charles Darwin developed the Evolution Of The Species by studying natural selection.
This site awards posthumous (mainly) honours to those people who make a special effort to avoid the continuation of their own contribution.
Have a look, some are really silly. Some are sad.
Others I can't mention on here

BTM,

Should that be 27 1/2 hours from now, unless Wednesday has been cancelled

Sorry I'd been up far too long -alarm went off at 04:00, that's after stopping up until 01:00 , so 3 hours sleep doesn't do anyone  much good. Especially when it's 2 nights on the trot.

Besides it was my typo, as it was 03:00 this morning, not Thursday  - will be repeated 'ad infinitum', it was on SKY after all :)

Look out for it in the Programme Guide

Think another episode is on next Tuesday night.

Just to help you along;

The Darwin awards are brilliant, although some are very sad:!:

You forgot to mention the mile or so of burnt rubber on the tarmac where the driver (soon to be pilot) of the car realised things were going wrong.

So you've heard of the airborn '67 Chevrolet Impala then, Simon?

Think it must be the full series as it's listed for next Tuesday (551) at 22:00.

It was the first Darwin award I heard of and generally they are popular within service circles.  This may be because they can be used as more examples to justify a commonly held working opinion of our transaltantic brethren.  Enough said
