David, if I have to tell you what better things there are to spend your money on I don't think I'll even try - would hate to blow open that sheltered life of yours ;-)

I did look at R50 MUD when  first bought the 90 but there were things I wanted to by for the 90 then and I decided that the £250 they wanted was better spent on parts with a real use (if you see what I mean). Since then someone has bought it so  couldn't get it now if I wanted. Could still have J,K,L or P50 MUD but I am still not convinced.

On the other hand if I did I could join the shiny blue crew, the 50ths and this group too, bet that would put the cat among the pigeons :-D

Have seen one but with mounting debts else where may have to give in to sensible thinking, although the [golly it is shiny isn't] It factor could kick in

Garry,

I know what you mean about the "ES" club and the MUD posse, but you have to realise that when LR decided to build the Disco II, they thought "Aha, how can we get rid of these remaining DI's", some wag said "let's paint them Atlantis Blue and flog them off as Special Editions like all end of line things", makes sense doesn't it .....

Andy, there's loads of 'MUD's on www.newreg.com, but again as I stated (& other members) the price is dearer than the DVLA.

Sorry there's no 'K44 MUD', but most othre combinations.

Frankie; And I thought we were friends :?:

When I bought my plate, there was 'S50 MUD' for sale, it was on the list anyway, but I went with the initals.

Have seen 'S50 BTM' for sale on 'newreg' :)

Does indeed make sense Frank but it's not quite correct. They weren't painted atlantic blue and sold off as 50th's (50th's were earlier than that). They actually painted them green or silver, chucked on a pile of extras for virtually nothing 'cos they had them stuck in the warehouse and they weren't selling (sidesteps, soft A bars, roof ladders etc) and called them the 'Safari' special editon. I know cos I have one of them too ;-)

I own P12 MUD and P13 MUD - 12 is on a 1996 Defender 90 County Hard top converted to a stationwagon and 13 is on a Range Rover TD6SE. Both get very dirty and play hard off road (yes even the Rangie which got mud in it's wheelarches when it was 3 weeks old)

Hi Dave

The wheel carrier's a Mantec one. Really solid, but at a price - cost me about £185 at the LRO show in Peterborough last year. Took about 60 minutes to fit it, after swapping the drop down tailgate to side mounted hinges...

If I get the swap done in time, there'll be some good photos of the plate with plenty of whitworth MUD around it!!!

Cheers

Serious question here about plates (reg).

If I do get one and put it on my motor, what do I do if I ever come to sell it (god forbid) .

OK it could stay on, but what if I wanted to keep the private plate?

Is it the same process again for getting a non private plate put back on?

Just thought it might be worth knowing this before I go ahead, if I'm allowed

I think you just need to pay the £80 transfer fee, not sure if you're existing registration goes into limbo and you get it back or if you're just assigned an age related plate.
Title: MUD posse
Post by: Paul on February 05, 2004, 20:46:29
Andy,

Chris is right, £80 to transfer it to another vehicle,
Or £105 to put it on retention (for transfer at a later date)
Should you not have a vehicle to transfer it to.

Your old number plate will be held at Swansea and put back
on the vehicle when the plate is transfered..

When I changed my last Disco, they put a different number on it, still a N reg, but a diffent number/area. In fact, I presume the new owner knows but it has five different registrations by thre time  I sold it.

It was registered with a normal N reg, in 96, it then had a private plate put on , when I purchase it , it was 12 month old and the exowner had keep the private plate, therefore it had gained another age related reg. I then put my private plate on, which I kept when I sold it.  Colliers then put a 3rd N reg plate on.

Cheers guys bit clearer on things now  :D

Mine too has in it's history had three different plates on. K reg plate from new 03/93, then private from 09/94 to 04/97 then to what it is now , but this is different from the original K reg plate  :?:

FWIW/IMHO;

Generally these days they re-assign the plate the vehicle originally had (has been the case for ALL of the Disco's that I have owned, but not for the RR...).

This of course depends on the age of the vehicle in question and more importantly if the previous number has been re-assigned elsewhere or removed from the register.

Keep your old number plates and when you go to the DVLA to apply to transfer your private plate to another vehicle or put it on retention take them with you and ask them to put that number back on.
If you do that you will get the old number back, if you just apply and don't specify a number then they will assign a new age related plate.

The best way to get round this is to insure your vehicle on it
'Vehicle Identifacation Number' VIN..

I insured my Discovery on it's VIN Number as I had to change my
private plate over from the old Disco to the new Disco...

No need to inform the insurance company of the change of number
plate...

Most companies won't want to insure your vehicle on it's VIN number
but if you tell them it will be undergoing a 'Cherished Transfer' they
will do it for you....

Richard,

When I asked about alloys that were fitted to 50ths, these were the ones I was offered, I assumed them to be correct but Sogster said they were different to his, Land Rover supplied them but they called them "XS", apparently they're easier to clean than the "Boost" ones, (according to Sogster)

Regards

Post by: Frankie-Boy on March 04, 2004, 11:21:16
Andy,

I'm sorry to say that the motor hasn't seen polish for about a year now, the shine you see is residual, it was done with a quality product though.

I'm not planning to get it muddy at all, sorry folks.

I will go along to meets etc with others and let them do the cleaning afterwards, (it's not one of my favourite jobs - nor is polishing either heh, heh), I will possibly get another toy later if the right vehicle comes along AND if the council leave us anywhere to drive, I don't want to keep a second motor for the occasional Tixover or Aston Cantlow meeting.
Title: MUD posse
Post by: Bush Tucker Man on March 04, 2004, 15:36:28
Frank, as you say the alloys you've got are the model that was fitted to the XS Discovery - most often identified by the black variated dotted transfers along the sills/door-bottoms.

'Sogs' says they're easier to clean than 'Boost'
Wouldn't know about cleaning them myself :D

D1KTY - the K was modified to look like an R - D1RTY!!! It was spotless  :(

Interestingly (or not - more like sad!!!) there was a program on Men and Motors called "Number Plate Heaven" the other night. Have a look here (http://www.menandmotors.co.uk/whatson/programmeinfo.xml?programme=NUMBER%20PLATE%20HEAVEN) for more details.

The defender's a bit of a paradox at the moment (a la Andy!) It's really clean 'cos I got fed up ending up covered in mud every time I got in or out. It's embarrasing actually - the Passat's muddier :?

As mentioned elsewhere,  I'm going to have to be a token Mud Posse member for a while... Still got the MUD plated 90, but it's not currently got a working engine... It decided to drink it's own oil on the A61 the day before I was due to take it on holiday  :( New engine's on order - actually a slightly less used version of the same engine - and I'm going to try to rebuild the current engine. It didn't go "pop" as I would have expected, but simply stalled when it had run out of oil! So not sure if it'll be okay or not.

I don't think I'll be able to get a MUD plate for the temporary replacement. Looks like it's going to be a Galv Chassis'd tax exempt series 3. Hopefully going to get it either during the week or at the weekend.

Hopefully my leafer experiences will be as much fun as the coiler experience... I'll be back with the 90 though. Soon...

Cheers

Ben

just for interest sake the UD in the older style plates shows the veihcle was origionaly registered at the dvla offices in OXFORD.other letter combinations for oxford were FC  BW.SWINDON was the home for the AM plates causing the arrival of jam, sam, lam and other such words.
this is the sort of useless information a 10 year old boy living on a farm on the borders of OXFORDSHIRE and NORTHAMPTONSHIRE aquires when there is only tractors, cattle and corn to talk to.(no brothers only 3 sisters).the nearest village was 3/4 of a mile away

Indeed they did use to own it. I bought it from them last October. My vehicle was originally (back in 1996) prepared by them as a demonstrator to show the Maxi Drives. These however were fitted by the designer according to Rogers. The vehicle then competed in some European events.

The vehicle was bought direct from Land Rover, and when Rogers first registered it for the road, it was done so using their plate K9MUD.

They then sold the vehicle to my brother, and it returned back to its normal plate of N61LGS, as Rogers retained K9MUD.

I then bought the vehicle from my brother in 2002, and last year I happened to note on Rogers website that they were selling the original reg. and a deal was done.  :(kerching):
