Since I happen to know what some people round here used to do for a living (hi muddy) and what certain people played at their weddings (Nelly)..
I figured it would be interesting, or at least tedium breaking for us to play the "lyric guessing game"... Go ahead, post meaningfull, insightfull... or just docile lyrics and see if other people can guess the songs.....
A couple to start with (reply if you want more)
"Familiarity breeds contempt"
"some people get by, with a little understanding" (if Nelly misses this one I think we should kill him)
"I do not know, but I'll let you have a go on..."
"life is unfair, kill yourself or get over it"
"dead I am the rat, feast upon the cat"
"I never knew love, but I know it now... I wanna give her my heart..."
-
Well...just so I don;t get killed.....
the one I should know is the Sisters of Mercy ... More
Which was played at my wedding.
-
Got any think by ABBA or the Tweenies
-
Sadly yes...
-
heres a nasty one
"i am rape, i am hate"
now go find it
-
try
"Drink the blood from my chalice, come to Hell and my Palace"
-
are you really?
I'd seek help if I were you :)
on a more serious note... I am not going to type that into google....
I'm already on an NSA list apparently....
-
Wrong Thrasher, you are going to get killed!!! That was not played at our wedding that was our engagement party!!! Still I guess time fades the memory - well I did get our anniversary wrong. Some people get by with a little understanding.....
-
hpwever don't foget that some people get by with a whole lot more....
-
I'm a bit lost on all these lyrics may be I should sign the wife on its more her music taste than mine
-
We are into Bay City Rollers and David Essex if I do that. - no chance
-
Right here we go then:
Twenty five whores in the room next door,
Twenty five scores and I need more.
From Jayne
-
Jayne,
Vision Thing :)
Now get yourself an independant sign on name :)
-
ok here's a selection that is or has recently been in my cd changer:
'Sitting by the railroad station thinking nothing could go wrong....'
'Now I know what I've got, it's just this song...'
'Observe the blood, the rose tattoo and the fingerprints on me from you...'
'I come home in the morning light my father yells "when you gonna live your life right?"...'
'Oberon told me the devil lives there, maybe he stole it and it could be anywhere, one star in silent millions, trying to get back home'
'When I was a young man, I carried my pack, and I lived the free life of a rover..'
a bit of variety there for you..
-
In line with Datalas' starter here are some lyrics from my LP collection, that dates them all to before a certain time.
All are car/truck/train/plane related by content or title, only selected verses typed.
Name the song, singer/s & album
"Now Daddy ran the whiskey in a big block Dodge,
bought it in an auction at the Mason Lodge.
Johnson County Sherrif painted on the side,
just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside.
Well him & my uncle tore that engine down,
I still remember that rumblin' sound"
"My P-47 is a pretty good ship*,
she took a round comin' across the channel last trip,
just thinkin' 'bout my baby and lettin' her rip.
Always got me through so far.
Well they can ship me all over this great big world,
but I'll never find nothin' like my North End girl.
I'm taking her home with me one day sir,
just as soon as we win this war"
"Hey pretty baby are you ready for me
It's your good rockin' daddydown from Tennessee
I'm just out of Austin bound for San Antone
with the radio blastin' and the BirdDog on.
There's a speedtrap up ahead in Selmatown,
but no 'local yokels' gonna shut me down
Me & the boys have got this rig unwound and we've come a thousand miles from a -------------"
Easy one this!
"The screendoor slams
Mary's dress waves
like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbisons singing for the lonely
hey that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside
darling you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared andyou're thinking that baby we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith there's magic in the night
you ain't a beauty but babe you're alright
Oh and that's alright with me"
"James Dean in that Mercury '49
Junior Johnson runnin' through the woods of Caroline
Even Burt Reynolds in that balck trans-Am
All gonna meet down at the ----------"
"I got a '69 Chevy with a 396
Fuelie heads and a Hurt on the floor
She's waitin' tonight down in the parking lot
outside the 7-11 store
Me & my partner Sonny we built her straight out of scratch
And he rides with me from town to town
We only run for the money, got no strings attached
We shut 'em up an we shut 'em down"
"Motor cooled down,
the heat went down,
that's when I heard that highway sound.
Cadillac looked like it was sittin' still,
as I caught .......at the top of the hill"
*A P-47 is a plane, the Lockheed Thunderbolt. Not a boat.
The last one is probably the easiest one of all, absolutely no prizes for correct answers.
Got loads more..
-
'I come home in the morning light my father yells "when you gonna live your life right?"...'
Ooooh ooooh, I know that one... "Girls just wanna have crumpets and got buttered toast" by Cindy Lauper ...
or something like that anyhow
-
Maddy.
"I come home in the mornin' light"
Cyndi Lauper 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun'
"Observe the blood...."
is it Suzanne Vega 'Marlena (on the wall)'?
"When I was a young man"
'And the Band played Waltzing Matilda'
Eric Bogle wrote it, can I take it your version The Pogues'?
On the anti-war vein, I think I prefer 'The Green Fields of France' by The Men They Couldn't Hang.
-
Maddy wrote:
'Observe the blood, the rose tattoo and the fingerprints on me from you...'
Jam Bum Jovi :?:
-
bunch of weirdos
nothing wrong with
it must be just like living in paradise...
-
Hey David Lee Roth, my hero, with um Just like living in Paradise, I think.
Mr Sheen - you are way off, BTM was correct with Suzanne Vega. It was indeed Cyndi Lauper, and my version was the Pogues (didn't know who wrote it... I do now!)
One one of BTM's I can do I'm afraid is Maybelline by Simon & Garfunkel. Cool song.
Here's one or two for Moose & Lynn:
'Can't resist a strange reaction from a giant dynamo...'
'The nights are cold and dark, maybe we should close the door...'
And for Jayne.... 'When you go, you go alone....'
''Don't give me why's and wherefores...'
Hey I'm enjoying this!! I could go on all week!
-
Lynn said can we have a clue :?:
After 2 gins, (each) our minds are not thinking straight.
-
Thanks Maddy for those kind words.
I've got the Pogues version as well, think mines on the B-side of 'Dark Streets of London'
'Maybelline' - Simon & Garfunkel?????? No.
Guess again, 'B. Goode' answer though
'The nights are cold & dark, maybe we should close the door'
Is it David Essex 'Winters Tale'??
-
Sorry Chris & Lynn - BTM got the David Essex one. Didn't you say you wanted some Abba lyrics Chris??? Clue enough for you? Now which one was it??? And now you have to give me the next line too!
Can't think of any BCR of the top of my head - perhaps you should try me with some??
BTM - Gonna have to check my S&G songs now, I could have sworn that he caught Maybelline at the top of the Hill, and it goes nicely into Maybelline, why can't you be true....' etc. Will have to think again.
-
No, either we have had to much gin, or not enought .
oh and Lynn want a little picture like yours and you never know she my go on line.
-
It's the second best Abba song -
Tunnel dancing is involved? In the moonlight?
-
OK proof - from a Simon & Garfunkel lyrics website. Original by Chuck Berry.
Maybellene, why can't you be true?
Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true?
You've started back doing the things you used to do.
The motor cooled down, the heat went down
and that's when I heard that highway sound.
The Cadillac a-sittin' like a ton of lead
a hundred and ten a half a mile ahead.
The Cadillac lookin' like it's sittin' still
and I caught Maybellene at the top of the hill.
Maybellene, why can't you be true?
Oh Maybellene, why can't you be true?
You've started back doing the things you used to do.
So am I a smart **** or what?
-
Now I feel, Thick
We have even dusted down the ABBA gold, which I will go and play.
-
Ah - think I may have found the problem then - it isn't on Abba Gold, it on More Abba Gold
Ok here's one you might know:
'i've played all my cards, and that's what you've done too, nothing more to say, no more ace to play...'
-
Ok here's some slightly more mainstream ones for everyone to do whilst bored at work tomorrow: You should all get these...
1. 'All your life you've never seen a woman taken taken by the wind. Would you stay if she promised you heaven, would you ever win?...'
2. 'She keeps all your dead hair for making up underwear...'
3. 'Out on the wily windy moors we roll and fall in dreams, you had a temper like my jealousy, too wild too greedy.'
4. 'I heard you on the wireless back in 62'
5. 'Steve walks warily down the street, his brim pulled way down low. Ain't no sound but the sound of his feet, machine guns ready to go....'
6. 'She told me she worked in the morning and started to laugh. I told her I didn't and crawled off to sleep in the bath.'
7. 'Standing in the door of the Pink Flamingo crying in the rain'
8. 'I saw her walking on the water as the sharks for coming for me, I felt ... pull me up, give me the kiss of life, just like the girl in Dr No, no, no.'
9. 'Helter Skelter in the summer swealter, the birds flew off with a fall out shelter, ten miles high and falling fast...'
10. an easy one to end with..... 'Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me..'
Answers on a postcard please.
-
Defeat graciously admitted...
I own up I never knew S&G covered 'Maybelline'
I'll have to track that one down, as I really like S&G's harmonies.
Fave is possibly 'Sound of Silence' or 'Homeward Bound'
Oh, and yes. You are a 'smart-ass'
-
Right, let's have a go then.
1.????
2. 'Jean Genie', David Bowie
(or was he still Ziggy at that stage?)
3. 'Wuthering Heights', Kate Bush
(not as good as the Babushka video, songwise I prefer 'Cloudbusting')
4. 'Video killed the Radiostar', Buggles
(Was it Trevor Horn, the 'Art of noise' guy?)
5. ???
6. 'Norwegian Wood', Beatles
(Was it George harrison or Ravi Shankar playing the Sitar
7. ??
8. 'I'm Mandy (fly me)', 10CC
9. 'American Pie', Don McLean
(Why did Madonna have to 'slaughter' this song? I take it you know it's an allegory about American music?)
10. 'Bohemian Rhapsody', Queen
(As if no-one knew. Most memorably featured for the best use of an AMC Pacer in 'Waynes World')
Sorry, have I spoilt it for everyone at work tomorrow, still no-ones got any of mine apart from Maddy with 'Maybelline'.
Come on they're not too hard, well maybe the first 3 are.
-
"If all you've got to prove today is your innocence
Calm down, you're as guilty as can be
If all we've got to lose alludes to yesterday
Yesterdays through
Now do anything you please"
"On a mission to make something happen
Feel like Delilah lookin' for Sampson
Do a little mattress dancin'
That's right I said mattress dancin' "
"Saw a Dead-Head sticker on a Cadillac*
Little voice inside my head saying don't look back
You can never look back
Thought I knew what love was, what did I know
Those days are gone forever
I should just let 'em go"
"You've heard about the legend of Jesse James**
And John Henry just to mention some names
There's a truck drivin' legend in the south today
A man called ..........from Atlanta GA"
"Every gear-jammer knows his name
Swear he's got ice water runnin' in his veins
A foot like lead and nerves like steel
He's gonna go to Glory ridin' 18-wheels"
*quite possibly one of the best summer tracks ever
**Clue. From film soundtrack, sung by actor from film (played guitar for, & had a song covered by Elvis Presley)
All car related, however loosely
-
Maddy,
I think No 5. is by Queen, can't think of the title yet !!
-
#5 Queen 'Another Bites The Dust'
and yeah got #10, classic :D
-
" I dreamed I saw on a moon lit stair,
spreading his hands on the multitude there"
"Captain Cook and Cain and Able, Jimi Hendrix to the Tower of Babel"
"My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies,
Fairytales of yesterday will grow but never die"
-
Sun is shinin in the sky
There ain't a cloud in sight
Its stopped rainin
Everybody's in a play
And don't you know
It's a beautiful new day.
Just right for the time of the year.
-
"Captain Cook and Cain and Able, Jimi Hendrix to the Tower of Babel"
It's a miracle.......
-
What about:
"I'm goin' down, down baby your street in a Range Rover"
Bit of a trick question, as it hasn't been sung by the English artist from Northampton yet. Will he wear bling-bling when it arrives :?:
-
Ah - 'Thank you for the music' - was that the title.
OK I am in the groove now.
8)
-
'Marie Anne'
That is Jeff Lynne & his boys (ELO), 'Mr Blue Sky'
Nice picture.
Someone I used to know went to school with Andrew Eldritch.
"Girl you taught me how to hurt real bad and cry myself to sleep
You showed me how this town can shatter dreams
Another lesson about a niaive fool who came to Babylon
And found out that the pie don't taste so sweet"
"I grew up on the dragstrip
I used to shut 'em down
I used to take their pink-slip
There's a sucker born in every town
I never showed no mercy
I blew them all away
They stood there and cursed me as I towed their lives away"
"There's a '49 Merc goin' round
Ridin' about half an inch off'a the ground
I'm in a .................
Boom boom shangalang shimmy shimmy shoowap bang-bang"
"I got outa work and headed for the neighbourhood beer-joint
I sat around and had a beer with the boys like I always do
Well I didn't have nothing to say, anyway there ain't no point
There's something 'bout a Monday that always makes me blue
Well it was well after dark so I knew my wife & kids would be waitin'
And I guess I took a left where I normally take a right
Wel l filled her up with gas, checked the oil at the Texaco station
I threw the car-seat in the dumpster and headed out into the night"
"Get kicked out for comin' home at dawn
by mom & dad' cause they were bawlin'
Throw some clothes into a dufflebag
shoutin' and slammin' 'bout how home's a drag
Who can I turn to, where can I stay?
Heard 'bout a place that's open all night and all day
It's a place you can go that the Cops don't know
you can act real wild, they don't treat you like a child"
-
"
"Saw a Dead-Head sticker on a Cadillac*...
That's The Boys of Summer, but can't for the life of me remember who it's by. Anyone else help me out there?
Moose - you're way off! The first one was Summer Night City, a must for every disco, and the second one was Winner takes it all, now go back and listen to that CD again!
Everyone else - well done, you've got most of them, especially BTM (yes I agree Cloudbusting is better, just the lyrics didn't spring immediately to mind. I suppose 'I hide my yo-yo in the garden' might have been a good choice. )
If you want some clues for those you haven't got yet -
1. This is the name of a girl. Another of this bands songs has recently been covered by the Corrs. That should make it easy.
7. A good old 80s song with lots of keyboard. some more lyrics from the same song: 'Take your hands off me, I don't belong to you, you see, take a look at my face for the last time, I never knew you, you never knew me....'[/quote]
-
"Saw a Dead-Head sticker on a Cadillac
Little voice inside my head saying don't look back
You can never look back
Thought I knew what love was, what did I know
Those days are gone forever
I should just let 'em go"
Don Henley, Boys of Summer. 'Dead Heads' being the collective term for fans of the Grateful Dead
-
"Get kicked out for comin' home at dawn
by mom & dad' cause they were bawlin'
Throw some clothes into a dufflebag
shoutin' and slammin' 'bout how home's a drag
Who can I turn to, where can I stay?
Heard 'bout a place that's open all night and all day
It's a place you can go that the Cops don't know
you can act real wild, they don't treat you like a child"
I think this is Runawy Boys by the Stray Cats :?:
-
Ok, try this one on for size.....
"I was standing on the platform being pounded by the rain
So I took the last compartment of a stationary train,
Someone got in behind me but I never cought their eye
But I though I heard a womans' voice cry...."
:D
-
Don't wanna be, under your thumb forever...
can't remember the rest but do remember the tune and the girls are now looking at me funny.
seem to think it's hall & oates but am probably wrong.
-
Yep Richard 'Mr Blue Sky' ELO :D
Daz it's a 'Miracle ' certainly was :D
-
Ah but Maddy, did you ever see Abba live?
Stafford '79, lousy journey down (with total strangers), nearly got arrested/kidnapped - but it was worth it. :P
-
Tina / Darren,
I think it was Godley & Creme, formerly 10cc and the video was shot on a haunted train!
Susie
-
Ah, Another bod from Solihull,
We could have quite a little gathering down that way.
-
I know a nice little place on the A38 or one in Coleshill
Chris W
-
Ah ha, a big star for LittleStar (sorry, couldn't resist  ).
-
Correct Maddy & Darren
'Boys of Summer' by Don Henley, released in 1985 believe it or not.
It must be one of th most evocative records about a lost or mis-spent past ever. Henley was the drummer in The Eagles.
Yep, 'Runaway Boys' from the eponymous debut album released in 1981 (2 copies on a shelf as I type)
The album also featured the singles 'Stray Cat Strut' & 'Rock This Town'
Brian Setzer was (& still is) a superb guitar player.
the only downside to the band was the fact that the drummer 'Slim Jim Phantom' married (still?) Britt Eckland.
-
Come on they're not that difficult, or are they??
I posted;
7 on 5th August @22:08
4 on 7th August @23:56
5 on 8th August @ 14:27
Which is a grand total of 16, only 3 have been guessed.
All together "We must try harder!"
-
Perhaps they are to difficult
-
I think it's because I haven't got broadband and can't spend hours trauling google for the answers ;)
-
Where's this from then?
Oh me, oh my, oh you, whatever shall I do?
Hallehuyah, the question is peculiar ...
-
I've got broadband and spent an hour trawling google just in time for the pc to crash as I was about to hit the submit button!
Anyway, Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavour On The Bedpost Overnight?
I think Lonnie Donegan sang it?
Chris W
-
How, you guys have the time to post and trawl the net, I will never know.
-
Chris, yes it was Lonnie Donegans chewing gum losing its flavour.
Okay everyone else I give in, here they are

For Maddy
With regard to your posting with the lyrics for 'And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda'
I've found the actual lyrics, complete with a synopsis of Bogles reasoning behind writing it, that's if my brief scan of the text is correct.
I take it your Pogues version is on 'Rum, Sodomy & The Lash'
Have a look at;
www.westfront.de/eric_bogle_waltzing_matilda.htm
There are also the lyrics for Bogles far superior (in my opinion) 'The Green Fields Of France' at;
www.home.hccnet.nl/s.vangompel/greatwar/music/williemcbride.html
Hopefully both these links will work.
I got introduced to www.lyrics.net.ua by someone. There's stacks of stuff on there, just go by the full name - if a solo artist, put the christian name first.
Words to 'Matilda' on there.
There are also most of the lyrics that I pulled from my record collection, for some reason no Stray Cats though, but (the brilliant) Brian Setzer does feature.
As does Don Henley for 'Boys of Summer', I got the album wrong as I was going from memory with those lyrics, as I don't have it.
'B-o-S' was on 'Building The Perect Beast, not 'End of The Innocence'
-
Maddy, If the 'Green Fields' link doesn't work please try;
www.members.fortunecity.com/folkfred.noman.html
Surprisingly 'Matilda' wasn't wrote until 1972 when he watched an ANZAC Day parade in Canberra.
'Green Fields' was only wrote in 1976, after a visit to (presumably?) ANZAC war graves in Northern France.
-
Green Fields.
For some reason the links won't work for me when I check them. Hope this one will.

Sacrilege!!
Travesty!!
I've just come back from the barbers in the village and the radio was playing on the inane, sub-Alan Partridge FM station that broadcasts from Leeds (the one that's named after the river that flows through the City)
To my horror there was a cover version of one of the greatest summer records ever emanating from the speakers (by a, presumably previously unknown girl)
Someone has actually covered (ruined) Don Henleys 'Boys of Summer'
That's my own opinion obviously.
It's not my favourite track of all time, but surely it's one of those classic tracks that shouldn't be messed with.
It's a bit like;
1. Madonnas turning the 'silk purse' that is American Pie', into a 'pigs-ear'.
2. Ronan Keatings version of 'If Tomorrow Never Comes'
3. Whitney Houstons 'I Will Always Love You'
4. Maria Careys 'Without You'
5. Chers 'Walking In Memphis'
6. Soft Cell 'Tainted Love
Similarly, much as I like Rolf Harris, I think he should have certainly left 'Stairway' alone.
Surprisingly he hadn't actually heard of it until about a month before recording it for a radio show in Australia.
(Digression) His auto-biography, 'Can You Tell Who It Is Yet?' is a brilliant book, the stories behind 'Tie Me Kangaroo Down' & 'Two Little Boys' alone make it worthwhile reading.
The writers & original artists are;
1. Don McLean
2. Garth Brooks
3. Dolly Parton
4. Nilsson
5. Marc Cohn
6. Gloria Jones (but wrote by Edd Cobb)
Much better cover version on 'Wild Youth' LP by Dave Phillips & The Hot Rod Gang, done with guitars - not a synthesiser in sight.
Needless to say I could add more, and other people possibly may do so.

How about a few for the younger(post 1980)members?

Right then,
These songs all have something quite big, in common.
1. Under the surface trying to break through
Deciphering the codes in you
I need a compass, draw me a map
I'm on the top, I can't get back
2.Confusion that never stops
The closing walls and ticking clocks
Gonna come back and take you home
I could not stop, that you now know
Singing come out upon my seas
Curse missed opportunities
Am I a part of the cure
Or am I part of the disease
3. so I wanna live... in a wooden house
where making more friends would be easy
oh and I don't have a soul to save
yes and I sin every single day
4. ideas that you'll never find
or the inventors could never design
the buildings that you put up
Japan and China... all lit up
the sign that I couldn't read
or the light that I couldn't see
some things you have to believe
but others are puzzles, puzzling me
:D

2-coldplay clocks
-
my turn:
1-His palms are sweaty, knees weak, arms are heavy
There’s vomit on his sweater already, mom’s spaghetti
He’s nervous, but on the surface he looks calm and ready
To drop bombs, but he keeps on forgetting
What he wrote down, the whole crowd goes so loud
He opens his mouth, but the words won’t come out
2-Just think, war breaks out and nobody turns up.
(If any member the family should die whilst in the shelter, put them outside,
but remember to tag them first for identification purposes.)
(If your grandmother or any other member of the family should die whil...

heh heh
3-Breathe with me
Breathe the pressure,
Come play my game I'll test ya
Psycho-somatic addict-insane
4-Make the place sizzle like a summertime cookout
Prowl for the best chick
Yes I'm on the lookout (lets dance)
Slow bangin shorty like a belly dancer with it
Smell good, pretty skin, so gangsta with it (oh, baby)
No tricks only diamonds under my sleeve
Gimme tha number
But make sure you call before you leave

2 is an old classic caused radio 1 no end of problems
4 is still in the charts i think
-
I left alone my mind was blank
I needed time to think to get the memories from my mind
What did I see can I believe that what I saw
that night was real and not just fantasy
Just what I saw in my old dreams were they
reflections of my warped mind staring back at me
Cos in my dreams it's always there the evil face that twists my mind
and brings me to despair

Dont get me wrong but i realy cant recall those as the lyrics to "the sisters " more .Im gonna have dig out every bit off sisters vinyl ive got
(which is all they made) And annoy the kids playing it.But while your on the subject off goldy oldies swmbo went to see bauhaus yesterday

Another one to test ya'll
What am i gonna do, My girlfriends test turned blue
we try'd to play it safe, that night we could not wait
No no this cant be right, she said it would be alright
I cant afford to be a daddy so i leave tonight
:D
-
heres some more
1-I know that you've been you crying
The tears in your champagne
Let clouds of joy come drowning
We're crying in the rain
Cause everybody dancing
Looks like a superstar
The bells that strike at midnight
2-Like a circle made of flames
No telling where it started burning
Oh, for every fire you contain
A new one keeps the circle turning
3-I can feel forever in my mind,
I can always reach for you inside
We can stay together in our minds
Feel you like a river never dies
(jake should get this being a master of vinyl)
4-Colour The World for we are the same
The colour of the skin doesn't speak for you
Make this world a much better place
Together we can colour the world
Peace to the world, colour the world
Different colour, different race
Call it a world for everyone
Together we can colour the world
right all of these are "dancy" tracks

Don henley - Boys of summer :D
Ok there is one.
Its just my bones that lie here

<Drifting wildly off the subject>
....and you forgot 'hungry like the wolf'!
Didn't want to scare you with talk of wolves
It's all right Tim, the equine is fairly well trained when around superior species. It did take 6 months of sharing the same work environment before it dared to approach. Followed by 6 months of mule impression until I relented and did go caving.
The odd nip on a fetlock is still needed occasionally.

Ummm, it could be felines in with the avians, but....
From what I recall, Ewan McColl sang it, but he only covered it. It is a much older song usually attributed to a bloke called 'Trad'.
He crops up quite often, but never had a number one!
