Title: Thinking of buying one
Post by: Suvvey on March 31, 2009, 20:54:29
Been seriously thinking about buying a Td4 freelander as the 'family' car but worried about the old horror stories about reliability when they first came out. Looking around the bay I could at a push stretch to a 2002 but seeing as I can't quite afford the facelift model I'm not too worried about getting a quality older one as long as Land Rover had sorted out any problems by the time it was built.

So are the stories still an issue or was it all an urban myth? :-k

Also has anyone got one going cheap ;)

They are not an urban myth, just a HUGE over reporting of some problems, mostly with the petrol engines. The Td4 is excellent with few major problems and certainly no more than any other vehicle produced in Europe today.
Buy one and enjpy it.

Just missed out on one local to me on ebay for £700  Non runner but suspected fuel pump, which after reading the tech files on here sounds quite likely. Shame but not committed enough to buy at the moment.

What about the issues with the VCU's on early models is this still a problem in slightly later ones? Mind you I guess even if it was they would of been replaced by now if I'm looking at a 2000-2002 model.

What do I need to look out for when buying one? So far the window electrics and transfer box mounts are on the list with all the usual suspects.

All window electrics
Sun roof winders
Leaking rear door seals making the boot cubby wet.
Rear diff mounts going, especially the nose one.
VCU support bearings (think that is what you mean)

VCU problems seem to haver been solved since around 2002.
