Title: Grand Cherokee 4.0l Ltd Diff Rebuild
Post by: Assich on January 31, 2007, 10:43:37
I noticed that you can buy an overhaul kit for the differential for around £40.  Porblem is the Haynes manual gives insufficient detail to undertake a rebuild.  Does anyone know where I can get this information.

ok.........this will help you make your mind up as you need certain specialist tools to make such a repair and they can be purchased from here:-
http://www.completeoffroad.com/index.php
and the true value of the correct parts are also listed.

you will find the easy (and cheaper) option is to purchase a good used axle.

Thanks but sure Isle of Man -a secondhand axle?!!  Nearest I may possibly get one of those is Aberdeen approx. 120 mile away and I won't really know if it's a good one because it will be from a scrapped car with no way of founding out who the owner had been and phoning them to find out.  Where the next nearest place is I have no idea but in any case postage will be bad news because according to the freight carriers we are not on the Mainland thus it costs significantly more.  No need to get a map of Britain out, Inverness is definitely on the Mainland.  Anyway I have a hydraulic press and a local engineering shop that will remove any bearings etc that I can't for some cash in the hand.  I presume I will need a spacer for torquing the pinion up and it doesn't have a collar designed to "give" to do that.  Do you know what size I need and torque settings.  Thanks.

I seem to be missing another vital piece of info.  Do you know how to adjust the limited slip clutches and to what setting?

the oil additive sorts the lsd....that's if the unit is serviceable, you can buy a copy service manual on cd (about £5) from the same auction site you mentioned earlier.

we in the isle of man have to endure the excessive post charge for goods also.

The clutch packs are unadjustable. You either replace them as a set or leave them be.
Clutch packs are inexpensive.

I would urge you to track down some local experience on your rebuild. Its very easy to render your vehicle entirely immobile. All the skill in the world will not fix your diff without the right tools.
