I took mine to a local diesel specialist, I thought it was a knackered pump because I was getting alot of black smoke. Expecially when the engine was put under pressure, Black smoke I believe indicates un-burn't fuel. Any way they said the timming slightly out which, due to the butter fly in the inlet manifold being set previously to allow more air to go to the servo. not actually on the pump. It cost me about £30 or so and now it runs as sweet as a nut.

Cheers Matt

The CAV injection pump has its own automatic fuel adjustment built inside. It is not something you want to be playing with. Most of the time its all down to the Timing which is very hard to set. You have to move the pump by milimeters at a time which is not a quick job. You can get away with moving the pump 3 times then you have to slacken off the injector pipes to allow the tension off them. It is a good idea to go and get professional help. Just go to get the pump timing adjusted as some diesel specialist have been known to rip off people with landys told them the pump needed a rebuild when it did not and then been charged £250 +

You havn't said whether the smoke is at idle or under load, If it is at idle you may find that the scew gear driven by the cam is worn or the bronze bush it runs on is worn, this causes the diesel pump to retard itself at idle which in turn gives puffs of white smoke. It is well worth checking this first as when i had my old diesel pump calibrated by the specialist after it was fitted it still smoked and then i found out about the scew gear, replaced that and the bush and hay presto smoke resolved.  If however it smokes all the time then this can be either an incorrectly adjusted pump or calibration.  Also antifreeze being burn't in the cylinders can cause white smoking under load which could mean head gasket. Personally i would start with the cost effective options first.
