Title: Salisbury axle breathers
Post by: thermidorthelobster on April 18, 2005, 22:41:13
Re the breathers on a 101 Salisbury axle:  does the nipple part the breather tube connects to rotate separately from the bolt head which holds it in?  ie does it use a hollow bolt & collar like the Disco breathers?

The reason I ask is, my centre axle breather is blocked, and when I tried to undo it, the whole tube part is turning with the bolt head;  I wasn't sure whether I could grip it with pliers to stop it turning or if it would then snap off.

Thanks,
David

Given that it's blocked I'd say take it out as is, ie let it spin, then soak in penetrating oils for a while and perhaps use a little heat.  Then undo it very gently.

I just cut the pipe...  Was hoping to save it (I need the length) but it was pretty mangled anyway.

It *is* the collar-and-hollow-bolt type.  Cleaned up nicely and now back on.  Job's a good'un.

Not sure what the neighbours think of me lying on a crawler playing with an axle breather in the light of a head torch, though.  The fancy took me and I didn't want to leave it until tomorrow...
