Title: 2.8/3.1 td trooper engines
Post by: william127 on March 29, 2009, 20:26:44
well i didnt have any luck finding a turbo so ive now brought a whole 3.1td :) after driving phil c's i think its a much nicer engine so may have the whole lot  changed :-k this has given me a couple of questions:
1 do the starter/alternator from the 2.8 fit the 3.1?
2 will it bolt straight on to the gearbox i have now?

thanks for all the help, william

They are basically the same engine with a different top end, so components will swap over.  It will fit the gearbox fine, just make sure you use the 3.1 flywheel and clutch though.

ah why do i need the 3.1 flywheel and clutch? that could be a problem as it will be joined to a landrover box using a conversion kit?(it wont be me doing the actual spannering).
thanks for the replies on this, and my original turbo question, theyve been very helpfull :D

p.s. what is a flywheel?

a flywheel is something you DO NOT want to drop on your toe !!

It's the plate which the clutch pushes against. The 2.8 trooper flywheel has a slightly smaller resess that the 3.1 so the clutches aren't interchangable, well a 2.8 clutch will go on a 3.1 but not visa versa. If your using the 3.1 it's best to keep things stock else there will be problems with compatable parts in the future, so stick a 3.1 cluch and original 3.1 flywheel in there in the process ;)
