Title: Tappet like noise but tappets are fine
Post by: madmike on June 12, 2007, 18:31:00
Hi all,

Wounder if anyone can help me, since having the engine rebuilt, i have had a tappet type noise coming from the engine in my 2.7td terrano. I have set and reset and re-checked the tappets and rockers, but all ok. I have fetch the head back off and found that three out the four combustion chambers (swirl pots - what ever they are called) in the head to be cracked although they do not seem to be loose. Could this be causing the noise?

With having the head reconned i have checked that the pistons do not protrude more than the head gasket, did a compression test before taken head off and have found the compression to be low (300psi), despite new rings and rehoned bores.

I have heard that little end bearings are common to go, just woundered if thats true and could that cause a tappet like noise?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as i am close to ring the scrap man. :(

ok to have small heat cracks in swirl chambers as long as they dont protrude into the cylinder head.
are you adjusting the tappets correctly ? what about the valves are they ok ?
