Title: hilux diffs..
Post by: Ja1983 on March 13, 2007, 17:55:20
am i right in thinking some of the surfs have diff locks/LSD`s as standard/optional extra?

...If so (can anyone see whats coming..?!) how do you know, and..

will they quickly and easily fit into a mk3 single cab 2.4d pickup?
how about sourcing from L/C`s etc..?

cheers

Difflocks on Surfs are a VERY RARE factory option. I've only ever seen one and have looked at many Surfs- but there are some out there. It was a factory option but sadly hardly anyone bought them. Most Surfs are open diff so that's no help.

Next best is LSD - now all UK 4Runner models came with this so there are  some around in the scrapies. I enquired after one once but they wanted nearly £500 for the thing. There was no guarantee it wasn't shot (the clutch plates can wear on these) plus £500 nearly gets you an ARB airlocker with 12 months warranty- so I never persued it. However, if you can find a more reasonable deal it might be worth trying. The LSD diff should have a sticker saying "LSD" on it. Failing that jack the rear axle up and see how the wheels spin when turned. On an LSD both wheels will go foward if one is spun forward. With open diff the other wheel will spin the oposite way of course.

excellent, will have a probe next time i`m in Thornton breakers, might be able to strip off half the rest of a surf while i`m there!

is it an easy swap?

i would have thought they would be more or less the same axle..

I don't know if a staight forward swap or not. I'm assuming your pickup is leaf sprung, the 4Runner is coil sprung so there's the main difference- but a bit of welding and grinding might sort it out?

I think that a G145 is a lsd.....but you will have to look into the ratios as front and rear must match (even with IFS)
