ive a 2000my td5 90
it was a good starter until recently then it was poor 10% of the time
took ages to crank over, other 90% of the time started first hit
ive just had a clutch and fly wheel fitted by a local garage he noticed the fuel pressure regulator was leaking into the bell housing so this was replaced
got it back had to be cranked over for about 2 mins before it would finally go
he checked fuel pressure and it was slightly low and the pump was a bit noisey so it was suggested that maybe the pump had knackered as it was over pumping due to the regulator leaking
new pump fitted new filter
primed the pump
now nearly impossible to start needs cranking over and over
scared to take it out in case i get stuck some where
nearly new battery , new glo plugs 5000 miles ago
used to run great

Once started does it then start better?
Could it be that air is getting into the fuel system, and causing the fuel to go back to tank, and is self priming before starting?
Could be on the fuel filter, or a joint.
Does that make sense???????

Hi Martin...
Could possibly be air... have a good look around the fuel filter housing... they have a habit of cracking/becoming porous.
Another possibilty is you need new injector seals. Cheap enough and easy to change with the correct tools.

hi ian
ill check the fuel filter housing would i see any deisel leaking out at the housing
ill try and get some one to do the seals
what about crank sensor ??i had that fail on a car a while back
ive had so much grief with the td5 i some times whish id stuck with the 200 tdi
except when its running its like a rocket thanks to porny

I had the same problem with my 1999 td5 a few weeks ago after i had a new fuel pump and filter fitted.
I primed the system a few times using the unofficial way of pumping throttle 5 times with ignition on and leaving the ecu to do the work.
I did this process twice and now it seems fine.
Hope this helps

help still needed
update put new crak sensor on ive had it on computer and the signal from the sensor fluctuates when cranking also the fuel pressure is reading low till it starts
it bumps first time on a small hill once started runs like a dream im totally confused and frightened to use it because i cannot gaurantee it will start

well its fixed fingers crossed and youll never belive what it was im still in disbelief myself ......................................................

...........................( trying to build up suspense)...........................................................
.......................
the starter
before you all start shouting at me it was spinning over very fast, but the faulty starter was drawing too many amps so the ecu did not have enough to fire the injectors or spin the pump up to pressure
never would have found it myself and my local mechanic could not find it ive picked the brains of the local stealer and independant to no avail
1 phone call to PORNY@ IRB DEVELOPMENTS and PETE @ BELL AUTOS and they pointed me in the right direction fixed 1/2 an hour later
just goes to show what great blokes they are could have hot me down and robbed me blind because i was stuck but no free advice
just hope i can pay them back by spreading the word of how good they are
once again thanks guys
