Well if I could sell 40 or so of these tops then I could get them made for a lot less than Safari charge.

Dont suppose you took some pics along the way did you?  I already have DIY snorkels for series 3 and discovery on www.landyworld.co.uk but would like a decent range rover one 2.  That has to be the tidiest I have seen!

Nice job.

Mike

Well I used to work as a project leader in rotationl moulding, so I have a few contacts and I have a rough idea what the tooling and peice part costs should be.  The grille would probably be the one Paddocks sell in Stainless for about £7.50.  You'd be disgusted at what I could have made the moulding for when I worked in the industry myself.

I'll make a couple of calls over Christmas.

Ok Ok, patience guys.

Give me an idea how much you'd be prepared to pay for one and would you be prepared to trim it yourself, given that's a big chunk of the cost.

Hey there's a lot of interest here RRblues,
what sort of price would they cost if you were able to do 40.
It looks pretty close to 40 wanted right now and there's more and more showing interest.

My mate bought a Safari Snorkle at Billing this year for his Disco and paid £160, Mantec do one for a RRC that they sell at £140, so if the trimming was done by the customer and you could do them for under £100 I reckon they'd go like hot cakey thingies!

I claim my % for the idea!

Maybe you could do 100 and make them cheaper, looks like they'd sell so long as the price was decent.

We're only talking about the top part anyway, when the pipe can be made from steel or in your case S/S it's not worth the cost of tooling up in plastic.  The tops I saw selling for about £80 IIRC, that's a rip-off but the cost of a complete snorkel in plastic is nearer what they cost to make, well it's not robbery anyway.

if i got the main pipe made from s/s where would i get the top and the pipe that connects to the air intake?? :)

When you say "top" you are meaning the piece above the bonnet?
Once out of site and harm I think it can be done in flexible rubber tubing.

Cheers,

Ron.

I'm looking at tooling for the very top, the upright alongside the screen is best made from steel tube.

just that top part though is damned expensive from Safari.

I bought a top from Southdown at Billing in July, it cost me £25.
I can get the pipe in plastic or S/S,
The fittings need some working out though.
I've had a look at a Safari snorkle for a Disco, if a cheap second hand one could be found it may be possible for it to be adapted to a RRC, entering the side of the Scuttle panel where it should go through the wing on the Disco.

Happy new year to you all...............

Ron.
