Can anyone help me with a question? My advance retard unit has seized on my 84 v8. The arm will move if I push it although it is stiff, but will not move under vacuum no matter how hard I suck. So, will any ad/ ret unit from a rover V8 dizzy fit, or is it only for this model ie will a P6 or SD1 or later EFI unit fit?
Cannot justify new price as it would be more than I paid for the car, and second hand ones from a breakers are not likly to be cheap as they seem to be quite rare.
This is my only transport to work so I cannot be without it waiting for a correct unit to show up.
If all fails i will have to sell on or break it for bits as it seems to be worth more in bits than running!
Thanks Andy

Get bits or a s/h dizzy from a pre '87 model and you will be ok - changes made after '87

If you get the wrong one it will make a difference, look for a car of similar age as sugested (did they make a LC and a HC at that time anyone?)
It's also possible the rubber has perished in side the vac unit.

Are you sure it is not just crap in the dizzy making things too stiff for the vac unit to work? I had this problem and cured it by removing the dizzy and giving it a thoughrough wash out and lubricate.
Also have you tried a new tube? or sucked directly on the vac unit? I have known the tube to collapse causing the same fault. If you have a breakers yard nearby go look at all similar age BL/Rover cars you may find the same vac unit on other dizzys.

Thanks for the replies.
Its definatly the vacum unit, the dizzy bit is free and turns easily. The little rod sticking out the side of the unit twitches if I suck on the pipe but doesnt do much else. The rod is really stiff to move as well.
There are a couple of later efi dizzys quite cheap on Ebay so will hope on that.
Cheers Andy

What should happen if you suck on the tube????

It should make the rod move inwards about 10mm or so and it should be quite easy to move by hand.
