Title: Bad engine type?
Post by: Bob696 on February 11, 2009, 16:26:29
We are thinking of adding a freelander to the fold (to keep the 90 and 110 company) but I will be honest I nothing about them (they are made by Landrover is the summit of my knowledge).

Whilst I am happy to take a poke around a car I have heard nasty rumours about one particular engine model that was most unreliable but for the life of me I can't remember which model it was!

Can someone enlighten me? or indeed give me some idea of the best model?

The 1.8 litre petrol engine had overheating problems so stick to the diesels
TD4 is an excellent engine found on 2001+?

Definetley go for the TD4, cracking engine!

Freelanders are pretty under rated I wich I hadn't had to sell mine  :'(

They are pretty cheap too!

A good 1.8 petrol is fine, once it's had the official upgrade. But you will still always have a niggling worry every time you drive it if you are anything like we were with ours!

As said before, the TD4 is a great engine.

Well most of the "rumours" concern the head gasket problem with the early 1.8 petrol models, although later models were much better and LR did an upgrade to many of these vehicles.
But as far as engines go there's a quite a choice.

1.8 petrol
2.0 Rover diesel upto 2001
TD4 diesel 2001 onwards
2.5 V6 petrol

Many agrue that the TD4(BMW engine) is the best, the rover diesel is a good solid workhorse-not as refined as the TD4 and the V6 is sporty but thirsty.

As with all LR's it pays to check everything twice, but giving the drivetrain a good look over is also worthwhile.

I would avoid the 1.8 petrol K series.  They are very prone due to head gasket failure (maybe earlier models) due to the way in which the cooling system is set up. This is a fault accross all K series installs from the Rover 200 to the elise. The re positioning of the thermostat fixes it ok, but Id agree that there are allways niggles.

I have a TD4 BMW Auto and its very nice indeed, I had a Disc 3 TDV6 as a courtesy car the other day and the freelander definitley felt more "nippy".

We pick up our 06 plate TD4 next saturday. 'Adventurer' model if that means anything to anyone. It is silver at the moment but I will spray it orange when the other half gets bored with silver :-)

you will enjoy it, i know i do with mine td4 commercial. i wouldn't be without it i can get 40+ to the gallon out of it and in these times economy is crucial. although it does get a thrashing now and again, boy racers have no chance
