Title: Cutting Out
Post by: ian101 on January 17, 2009, 09:57:58
A friend at work has a 2000 petrol freelander, the problem he's experiencing is that on a long trip after around 70 miles it cuts out, no warning, no great theatricals, just dies.

The only clue I have is that the exhaust manifold heat shield is missing and he wonders if this in turn is causing the alternator to overheat which causes it to cut out??

Any ideas welcomed
Cheers

Does it restart after a minute or so? If so, a couple of possible causes...

Coil beginning to fail.
Fuel vapourisation. Is the missing heat shield anywhere near a fuel pipe?

No doubt there are other possibilities.....

If I remember rightly he teold me he has to wait half an hour or so before it re-starts

That does sound like fuel vapourisation.
Get a heat shield fitted and see if that cures it.
